Michael Schumacher claimed his first Formula 1 victory at the 1992 Belgian Grand Prix, judging the changing conditions at Spa-Francorchamps superbly. Nigel Mansell and Riccardo Patrese followed him home, securing the constructors’ championship for Williams.

Championship background
Nigel Mansell arrived at round 12 leading the 1992 F1 World Championship on 92 points, with Riccardo Patrese on 40. Williams headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 132 points.
Race entries
Brabham did not return after Hungary, reducing the entry to 30 cars and ending the need for pre-qualifying. Emanuele Naspetti made his debut for March in place of Paul Belmondo, and Christian Fittipaldi returned to Minardi after recovering from his injury.
Friday Free Practice
Friday practice was overshadowed by Erik Comas‘ heavy accident at Blanchimont. Ayrton Senna stopped to help and switched off the Ligier‘s engine while Erik Comas was unconscious. The Frenchman was withdrawn from the rest of the weekend on medical advice. Nigel Mansell set the fastest time, but the incident was a stark reminder of Spa’s demands even before the weather deteriorated.

Friday Qualifying
Nigel Mansell‘s Friday lap of 1:50.545 secured a clear advantage over Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher. Riccardo Patrese was fourth, followed by Jean Alesi and Gerhard Berger. The dry session ultimately decided the starting order.

Saturday Free Practice
Michael Schumacher led a wet Saturday practice, while Gerhard Berger suffered a major accident approaching Eau Rouge after aquaplaning. He escaped injury. With rain also possible for the race, the session remained valuable despite the lack of any prospect of beating Friday’s qualifying times. The drivers were allowed to practise starts in the conditions, giving the teams more information about traction and their electronic systems.

Saturday Qualifying
Nigel Mansell was also fastest in Saturday’s rain, but the much slower times left the grid unchanged. Christian Fittipaldi and both Andrea Moda drivers failed to qualify; Erik Comas was already withdrawn after his accident. McCarthy left Andrea Moda after a frightening steering problem on Friday, and the team was subsequently excluded from the championship.

Sunday warm-up
Nigel Mansell topped the warm-up under threatening skies. Michele Alboreto and Olivier Grouillard had a heated disagreement over an incident on track, adding tension to the final preparations. Michael Schumacher was again near the front, and the possibility of rain meant the teams could not treat the dry-weather order as a reliable guide to the afternoon. Tyre decisions would soon become central to the contest.

What happened in the 1992 Belgian Grand Prix?
Ayrton Senna led initially, but Nigel Mansell and Riccardo Patrese soon moved ahead. Rain prompted most of the leaders to fit wet tyres, while Ayrton Senna stayed on slicks in the hope the shower would pass. The gamble failed and left him with a recovery drive.
As the circuit dried, Michael Schumacher ran wide and fell behind Martin Brundle. Seeing the condition of his team-mate’s wet tyres helped confirm the need to change, and he stopped for slicks before the Williams drivers. That decision put him into the lead. Nigel Mansell began closing, but exhaust trouble slowed both Williams cars.
Michael Schumacher took his first victory a year after his debut at the same circuit. Nigel Mansell and Riccardo Patrese finished second and third, enough to secure Williams the constructors’ title. Martin Brundle was fourth, with Ayrton Senna recovering to fifth ahead of Häkkinen. Benetton‘s timely tyre call had turned a competitive run into a breakthrough win.
After the race, Nigel Mansell headed the drivers’ standings with 98 points, followed by Riccardo Patrese on 44. Williams led the constructors’ table on 142, with Benetton on 64.
