Championship background

Damon Hill arrived at round 2 leading the 1996 F1 World Championship on 10 points, with Jacques Villeneuve on 6. Williams headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 16 points.

Race entries

Tarso Marques made his Formula 1 debut for Minardi, replacing Giancarlo Fisichella for the South American rounds. The Brazilian joined Rubens Barrichello, Pedro Diniz and Ricardo Rosset in a strong home contingent. Away from the cockpit, Tom Walkinshaw’s purchase of Arrows gave the team a significant new direction.

Free Practice

Friday morning was disrupted for Ferrari when Eddie Irvine crashed heavily on his first lap. He escaped injury, but the car was badly damaged. The newly resurfaced circuit also presented Williams with grip problems, leaving Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve with work to do before their Melbourne form could be repeated.

Benetton ended the afternoon first and second, with Jean Alesi ahead of Gerhard Berger. Damon Hill spun early in the session and Jacques Villeneuve remained well down the order as Williams worked on its setup. Tarso Marques made an encouraging first impression by outpacing Pedro Lamy, while a technical problem curtailed Heinz-Harald Frentzen‘s running.

Williams recovered on Saturday morning, with Damon Hill finding much more convincing pace. Benetton‘s preparations went in the opposite direction: Jean Alesi damaged his car in an excursion, and Gerhard Berger‘s running was severely restricted. The team’s Friday advantage had not removed its underlying concerns about balance and straight-line speed.

By the end of morning practice, Damon Hill had established himself as the driver to beat. Ferrari was still chasing reliability and a workable setup, with Michael Schumacher suffering a water leak. Jacques Villeneuve also had to build his understanding of Interlagos, where the learning curve was proving steeper than at the season opener.

Qualifying

Damon Hill took pole with a 1:18.111, almost a second clear of Rubens Barrichello‘s Jordan. Jacques Villeneuve recovered to third ahead of Michael Schumacher and Jean Alesi. Rubens Barrichello‘s front-row place gave the home crowd plenty to cheer, while both Fortis qualified after their Australian disappointment.

Eddie Irvine had to use the spare car after a fire as his engine was started. Pedro Diniz and Tarso Marques lost their qualifying times and were permitted to race from the back. Olivier Panis retained his original grid position after the initial action against him was overturned.

Herbert started at the pit lane after switching to his spare car.

Diniz and Marques had their times deleted after receiving outside assistance, but were allowed to start at the back of the grid.

Sunday warm-up

Martin Brundle put Jordan on top in warm-up, reinforcing the team’s strong weekend. Michael Schumacher went through the gravel in the spare Ferrari and returned with damage, while David Coulthard stopped on his first lap. The session took place in dry conditions, but a heavy downpour before the start would force the teams to rethink their race preparations.

What happened in the 1996 Brazilian Grand Prix?

Damon Hill led into the spray and soon built a useful cushion. Behind him, Jean Alesi and Rubens Barrichello fought repeatedly through the opening corners, with the Benetton reclaiming the position whenever the Jordan ran wide. Jacques Villeneuve eventually spun out while under pressure from Jean Alesi.

As the circuit dried, tyre timing became decisive. Damon Hill‘s single planned stop coincided with the switch to slicks. Jean Alesi also made the transition successfully, while Rubens Barrichello required another visit after stopping earlier for wet tyres. David Coulthard‘s early gamble on slicks brought brief speed but ended in retirement.

Rubens Barrichello then pursued Michael Schumacher for third, only to spin out late in the race. Damon Hill won ahead of Jean Alesi, with Michael Schumacher a lap down in third. Häkkinen, Mika Salo and Olivier Panis completed the points places. Damon Hill had now surpassed his father’s victory total and strengthened his early championship lead.

After the race, Damon Hill headed the drivers’ standings with 20 points, followed by Jacques Villeneuve on 6. Williams led the constructors’ table on 26, with Benetton on 9.
