Championship background

Damon Hill arrived at round 8 leading the 1996 F1 World Championship on 43 points, with Jacques Villeneuve on 26. Williams headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 69 points.

Race entries

The driver line-ups stayed unchanged. Jacques Villeneuve made his first Formula 1 appearance at the circuit named after his father, drawing enormous home interest. The track had also changed: the temporary chicane on the long straight was gone, increasing speeds and giving the teams a revised braking challenge.

Free Practice

Friday opened in warm, humid conditions on a smooth but slippery surface. Michael Schumacher tried Ferrari‘s new high-nose configuration while Eddie Irvine initially retained the older version. Mika Salo encountered transmission trouble in the morning, reducing Tyrrell‘s opportunity to learn the revised layout.

Jean Alesi and Gerhard Berger put Benetton first and second by the end of the afternoon. Williams concentrated on setup work, with Jacques Villeneuve eighth rather than chasing the day’s fastest lap. Mika Salo‘s transmission problems continued, while David Coulthard also struggled with his gearbox during Friday’s running.

Saturday brought a stronger showing from Williams as Jacques Villeneuve found the pace to lead the morning. Ferrari extended its high-nose package to Eddie Irvine, but reliability remained a concern. Ukyo Katayama suffered engine trouble during the day, adding to Tyrrell‘s already difficult preparations.

Jacques Villeneuve finished practice ahead of Damon Hill, setting up a close qualifying contest in front of the home crowd. Ferrari had to replace Eddie Irvine‘s engine before the afternoon, while Michael Schumacher‘s car would also require attention. Williams could approach the grid-setting hour with greater confidence in both speed and consistency.

Qualifying

Damon Hill snatched pole from Jacques Villeneuve on his final run, setting a 1:21.059 to beat the Canadian by just 0.020 seconds. Michael Schumacher was third, followed by Jean Alesi, Eddie Irvine and Häkkinen. A late improvement from Damon Hill denied the home crowd its hoped-for pole.

Jean Alesi‘s accident brought out a red flag, and Gerhard Berger also hit the barriers at the same corner. Michael Schumacher used the spare car after electrical trouble and could not complete the clean session he wanted. Both Fortis qualified for the race.

Sunday warm-up

Williams remained on top in warm-up. Michael Schumacher assessed the spare Ferrari, while David Coulthard‘s engine failure forced McLaren into a car change for the race. Pedro Diniz also needed his spare after electronic trouble. The final session reinforced how much reliability could influence the result alongside the leading teams’ different fuel strategies.

What happened in the 1996 Canadian Grand Prix?

Damon Hill retained the lead at the start and used his two-stop strategy to establish the pace, while Jacques Villeneuve ran a one-stop race. Michael Schumacher had to start from the rear after a problem before the formation lap, and Eddie Irvine retired early with suspension failure.

The Williams pair remained in control. Jean Alesi held third, while Gerhard Berger crashed during his pursuit of his team-mate. Martin Brundle lost a strong position when contact with Pedro Lamy damaged his front wing, requiring an extra stop.

Damon Hill won ahead of Jacques Villeneuve and Jean Alesi. David Coulthard and Häkkinen took fourth and fifth for McLaren, with Martin Brundle recovering to sixth. Michael Schumacher‘s eventual retirement completed a disappointing afternoon for Ferrari, as Williams strengthened its position in both championships.

After the race, Damon Hill headed the drivers’ standings with 53 points, followed by Jacques Villeneuve on 32. Williams led the constructors’ table on 85, with Ferrari on 35.
