Championship background

Damon Hill arrived at round 12 leading the 1996 F1 World Championship on 73 points, with Jacques Villeneuve on 52. Williams headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 125 points.

Race entries

Forti did not appear, leaving ten teams and twenty drivers. Giovanni Lavaggi continued at Minardi and sought to qualify after missing the cut in Germany. The slow circuit brought maximum-downforce packages, while Sauber introduced an updated Ford engine aimed at improving drivability.

Free Practice

Friday morning produced little early running because the circuit was coated in dust. Jacques Villeneuve and Giovanni Lavaggi were the only drivers out in the first half-hour, learning the track while others waited for grip to improve. Some used wet tyres to avoid sacrificing their limited supply of slicks.

The afternoon finally produced a closer contest, with Damon Hill edging Michael Schumacher by just 0.022 seconds and Jacques Villeneuve third. Teams still had to manage tyres carefully on the dirty surface. Ferrari‘s revised diffuser and the additional wings used by McLaren and Jordan reflected the need for maximum downforce.

Saturday morning remained treacherous, with several drivers going off as dust continued to punish mistakes. Michael Schumacher nevertheless showed that Ferrari could challenge Williams on outright pace. Jean Alesi and Olivier Panis received fines for continuing after the chequered flag, while David Coulthard was penalised for pit-lane speeding.

Michael Schumacher finished the morning fastest, leaving a close qualifying battle in prospect. Benetton was less comfortable, struggling with understeer, while the updated Sauber engine offered a more encouraging response. On a circuit where passing was difficult, those differences in balance carried particular importance.

Qualifying

Michael Schumacher took pole with a 1:17.129, just 0.053 seconds ahead of Damon Hill. Jacques Villeneuve was close behind in third, followed by Eddie Irvine. The leading three were separated by only 0.130 seconds after a tightly fought session.

Jean Alesi and Gerhard Berger occupied the third row, although Jean Alesi‘s late engine problem prevented another attempt. Giovanni Lavaggi qualified the Minardi, restoring a twenty-car grid. Michael Schumacher had earned Ferrari a valuable opportunity, but both Williams drivers remained firmly in the contest.

Sunday warm-up

Michael Schumacher also led warm-up. Damon Hill spent time running over his grid position to improve its grip, conscious that the cleaner side of the track favoured Michael Schumacher and Jacques Villeneuve. Hot conditions and tyre wear made fuel-stop planning important, with teams considering two- and three-stop approaches.
