Championship background

Damon Hill arrived at round 10 leading the 1996 F1 World Championship on 63 points, with Jacques Villeneuve on 38. Williams headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 101 points.

Race entries

The regular field arrived, but Forti‘s funding and engine-supply problems kept its cars out of Friday practice. The team eventually appeared in qualifying with limited running. Elsewhere, McLaren brought back its shorter-wheelbase chassis and Arrows introduced a revised Hart engine for evaluation.

Free Practice

Friday began on a dusty track, with some drivers using wet tyres while the surface cleaned up. Benetton assessed an electronic differential, initially with Gerhard Berger, and the Williams drivers chose different front-wing specifications. Forti‘s absence meant its drivers lost the entire opening day’s preparation.

Jacques Villeneuve finished the afternoon quickest after using fresh tyres following an earlier puncture. Damon Hill and Jean Alesi followed in the combined order. The Canadian had extensive testing experience at Silverstone and looked much more at ease than at several unfamiliar circuits earlier in the season.

Saturday brought a more representative contest between the Williams drivers, with Damon Hill regaining the advantage. Benetton continued wrestling with braking and suspension behaviour, while Arrows put its revised pneumatic-valve Hart engine into Jos Verstappen‘s car. The development promised more power, but handling remained a limitation.

Damon Hill completed the morning fastest, with Jacques Villeneuve close behind. Heinz-Harald Frentzen tried aerodynamic changes on the Sauber but still struggled with understeer, even on new tyres. The practice work therefore left a clear task for Sunday as well as a difficult qualifying session ahead.

Qualifying

Damon Hill won the Williams duel with a 1:26.875, beating Jacques Villeneuve to pole. Michael Schumacher took third after damaging his car’s plank over a kerb, with Häkkinen fourth. Damon Hill also had a minor clutch problem, but it did not prevent him securing the grid’s best position.

Ricardo Rosset‘s times were deleted after he missed a weighing check, and he was permitted to start at the rear. Neither Forti qualified within 107%, bringing the team’s final competitive appearance to an early end.

Sunday warm-up

An early shower left the track damp before it dried during warm-up. Häkkinen set the pace ahead of the Williams pair. Jean Alesi chose the spare Benetton for the race because he preferred its balance, accepting the older engine specification fitted to it.

What happened in the 1996 British Grand Prix?

Jacques Villeneuve took the lead as Damon Hill made a poor start and fell behind several cars. Both Ferraris retired almost immediately, Michael Schumacher with hydraulic trouble and Eddie Irvine with a differential failure. Jacques Villeneuve began building a lead while Damon Hill struggled to get past Häkkinen.

Damon Hill‘s afternoon ended when a wheel-nut problem caused him to spin off at Copse. Jean Alesi later retired with overheating rear brakes, moving Gerhard Berger into second. Jacques Villeneuve remained in control and collected his second victory of the season.

Häkkinen finished third, followed by Rubens Barrichello, David Coulthard and Martin Brundle. Benetton‘s protest against the winning Williams was rejected. Jacques Villeneuve had cut Damon Hill‘s championship lead from 25 points to 15, keeping the title contest alive.

After the race, Damon Hill headed the drivers’ standings with 63 points, followed by Jacques Villeneuve on 48. Williams led the constructors’ table on 111, with Benetton on 41.
