Championship background

Damon Hill arrived at round 13 leading the 1996 F1 World Championship on 79 points, with Jacques Villeneuve on 62. Williams headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 141 points.

Race entries

The same twenty drivers returned, with Forti still absent. Ferrari introduced its seven-speed gearbox, while Williams worked on a braking system to help Damon Hill hold the car on the sloping grid. Jacques Villeneuve arrived with the constructors’ title secured and his own championship challenge gaining momentum.

Free Practice

Gerhard Berger led the opening session, but Michael Schumacher‘s heavy crash dominated the morning. The Ferrari slid backwards into the tyre barrier, leaving its driver bruised and the car badly damaged. Michael Schumacher walked away, but his running was over for the day.

Gerhard Berger again set the pace in the afternoon, with David Coulthard and Jacques Villeneuve next. Ferrari began the extensive work needed to prepare a replacement car for Michael Schumacher. Jacques Villeneuve used the session to learn Spa, while Damon Hill concentrated on setup work rather than matching the quickest fresh-tyre runs.

Overnight rain washed the circuit before Saturday’s practice. Michael Schumacher returned after Ferrari‘s rebuild, still sore from the accident. The team needed to recover lost preparation time as the Williams drivers developed their setups for a track whose conditions had changed since Friday.

Jacques Villeneuve finished the morning fastest, reinforcing his growing confidence on his first Grand Prix visit to Spa. Damon Hill had not found the same balance, while Benetton‘s strong Friday showing proved harder to reproduce. With rain threatening qualifying, an early clean lap was likely to matter.

Qualifying

Jacques Villeneuve took pole with a 1:50.574, ahead of Damon Hill and Michael Schumacher. Rain arrived during the session and prevented a meaningful late response. David Coulthard qualified fourth, with Gerhard Berger fifth and Häkkinen sixth.

Michael Schumacher‘s third place was a strong recovery after losing half of Friday’s running. Giovanni Lavaggi failed to meet the 107% threshold, leaving nineteen starters. Williams had the front row, but its drivers would still need to navigate Spa’s changing conditions and the race’s tactical demands.

Sunday warm-up

The track dried after a wet night, and drivers soon moved from treaded tyres to slicks. Jacques Villeneuve led the warm-up, but Damon Hill spun at the Bus Stop and also encountered a misfire that led him to use the spare Williams for the race. Jos Verstappen and Pedro Diniz had late spins as well.

What happened in the 1996 Belgian Grand Prix?

Jacques Villeneuve led away, while both Saubers and Olivier Panis were eliminated in the first-corner incident. Michael Schumacher moved into second as Damon Hill lost ground. A heavy accident for Jos Verstappen later brought out the safety car; he escaped serious injury.

The neutralisation triggered a rush of pit stops. Confusion over radio instructions delayed Jacques Villeneuve‘s stop and disrupted Damon Hill‘s as well. Ferrari executed Michael Schumacher‘s stop cleanly, putting him in position to lead once the McLarens, which had stayed out, made their own visits.

Michael Schumacher held off Jacques Villeneuve to take his second win of the season. Häkkinen finished third, followed by Jean Alesi, Damon Hill and Gerhard Berger. Ferrari had converted a difficult start to the weekend into victory, while Jacques Villeneuve‘s six points kept the pressure on his team-mate.

After the race, Damon Hill headed the drivers’ standings with 81 points, followed by Jacques Villeneuve on 68. Williams led the constructors’ table on 149, with Benetton on 55.
