Championship background

The new season brought a single Saturday qualifying session and the 107% qualifying threshold. A revised start procedure also made its debut: five red lights illuminated in sequence, then went out together to release the field. Williams arrived with Damon Hill and reigning IndyCar champion Jacques Villeneuve, while double world champion Michael Schumacher began a new chapter at Ferrari.

Race entries

Ferrari paired Michael Schumacher with Eddie Irvine, while Jean Alesi and Gerhard Berger moved to Benetton. David Coulthard joined Mika Häkkinen at McLaren, with the Finn returning after his serious Adelaide accident. Johnny Herbert joined Sauber, Martin Brundle moved to Jordan, and newcomers Ricardo Rosset and Giancarlo Fisichella lined up for Arrows and Minardi respectively. Giancarlo Fisichella replaced the originally intended Taki Inoue after funding failed to materialise.

Thursday familiarisation

Thursday’s additional running gave the field its first opportunity to learn the new circuit. Jacques Villeneuve was almost a second quicker than Damon Hill, with Jean Alesi third. Several drivers spun on the unfamiliar surface, while Giancarlo Fisichella escaped injury in a crash. Four red-flag interruptions frustrated Michael Schumacher‘s attempts to complete a quick lap.

Free Practice

Friday began with the teams continuing to learn the temporary circuit and refine settings established in Thursday’s familiarisation. The hot, dusty conditions offered little margin for error. Williams had enjoyed extensive winter running, while Ferrari was still working to turn its promising pace into a dependable race package.

Damon Hill put together a late improvement to finish the afternoon ahead of Jacques Villeneuve. Both Damon Hill and Michael Schumacher had excursions during the day’s running; Michael Schumacher ran through the gravel after trying a different setup. Despite those moments, Williams looked well prepared, and Ferrari‘s driver felt the troublesome F310 was making progress.

Saturday brought a more costly phase of preparation for several teams. Benetton needed an engine change for Jean Alesi, while Gerhard Berger damaged his car after leaving the circuit. With only one qualifying hour now available, losing morning running made it harder to arrive at the decisive session with a settled car.

The final practice preparations reinforced Williams‘s strength, while Eddie Irvine continued closing the gap to Michael Schumacher. Jordan had a less comfortable build-up: Martin Brundle suffered an engine failure during the morning, adding to his difficulties finding a satisfactory balance. The afternoon would offer little opportunity to recover lost confidence before the grid was decided.

Qualifying

Jacques Villeneuve claimed pole on his Formula 1 debut with a 1:32.371, beating Damon Hill by 0.138 seconds. Eddie Irvine put his Ferrari third, ahead of Michael Schumacher, who had to use the spare car. Häkkinen qualified fifth in an encouraging return to competition.

Giancarlo Fisichella‘s accident brought out a red flag, but he qualified comfortably. Luca Badoer and Andrea Montermini were less fortunate: both Fortis fell outside the new 107% limit and were unable to start. The rule immediately made qualifying pace a condition of admission, as well as a contest for grid position.

Sunday warm-up

Damon Hill led warm-up, but Jacques Villeneuve stopped with a mechanical problem, showing that Williams could not take reliability for granted. Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Pedro Lamy also had cars fail during the session. Olivier Panis spun, and others ventured across the grass as the field completed its last checks before the new starting procedure was used in a race.

What happened in the 1996 Australian Grand Prix?

The first start ended in a frightening accident when Martin Brundle‘s Jordan was launched into a roll after contact in the pack. He escaped injury and was cleared to restart in the spare car. Johnny Herbert could not take the restart because Sauber‘s spare went to Heinz-Harald Frentzen; his official result is therefore DNS.

Jacques Villeneuve led the restarted race, with Damon Hill staying close. The Williams drivers briefly changed places around their pit stops before Jacques Villeneuve reclaimed the lead. Michael Schumacher‘s challenge ended with brake trouble, while Jean Alesi retired after contact with Eddie Irvine.

An oil leak eventually forced Jacques Villeneuve to slow, allowing Damon Hill through to win. The debutant still secured second, with Eddie Irvine third. Gerhard Berger, Häkkinen and Mika Salo collected the remaining points. Damon Hill‘s fourteenth victory matched his father Graham’s career total and gave Williams the ideal start to its title campaign.

After the race, Damon Hill headed the drivers’ standings with 10 points, followed by Jacques Villeneuve on 6. Williams led the constructors’ table on 16, with Ferrari on 4.

Herbert is listed as ‘Did Not Start’ ( DNS ) in the official results, despite having taken the first start prior to the race being stopped. Regulations at the time were such that in the event of a stoppage being ordered on the first lap, that start would be deemed null and void, and the second start would take place as if the first had never occurred. As he did not make the second start, he’s classified as DNS. His place on grid was left vacant.
