Championship background

Damon Hill arrived at round 14 leading the 1996 F1 World Championship on 81 points, with Jacques Villeneuve on 68. Williams headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 149 points.

Damon Hill arrived knowing Williams would replace him with Heinz-Harald Frentzen for the following season. He could still settle the drivers’ title at Monza, but Jacques Villeneuve remained within reach. Ferrari‘s recent Belgian victory added to the anticipation among the Italian supporters.

Race entries

The ten teams kept their driver pairings. The main changes were technical: reduced-downforce packages for Monza‘s straights, an updated Mercedes engine, and revised components at Williams and Benetton. The organisers also faced an evolving problem over how to prevent drivers cutting the chicanes.

Free Practice

Gerhard Berger and Jean Alesi led Friday morning for Benetton, but repeated excursions left gravel on the circuit. Rubens Barrichello damaged his Jordan after sliding into a tyre barrier, while Damon Hill spun and Jean Alesi ran through the gravel. The opening session highlighted the difficulty of keeping the chicane approaches clean.

Michael Schumacher put Ferrari fastest in the afternoon, ahead of Häkkinen and Gerhard Berger. David Coulthard‘s session ended early after a spin, and Jean Alesi had a fast excursion at Parabolica. Damon Hill remained focused on race preparation, while the drivers pressed for changes to the markers intended to prevent corner-cutting.

Saturday’s wind brought more dust onto the track and forced teams to reconsider their settings. Tyre stacks replaced the earlier markers, adding a different hazard at the chicanes. Ferrari could not immediately reproduce its Friday advantage as the balance of the leading cars changed.

Häkkinen finished the morning quickest. Jacques Villeneuve lost valuable running after an encounter with Pedro Diniz near Parabolica damaged his car, leaving Williams with less time to refine his setup. Despite that interruption, the Canadian remained close enough to Damon Hill to challenge for the front row.

Qualifying

Damon Hill secured pole with a 1:24.204, beating Jacques Villeneuve and Michael Schumacher. Häkkinen and David Coulthard placed both McLarens in the top five. Damon Hill‘s pace offered an emphatic response to the uncertainty surrounding his future.

Gerhard Berger spun and used the spare Benetton, while Ricardo Rosset borrowed Jos Verstappen‘s Arrows after problems starting his own car. Heinz-Harald Frentzen also hit the barriers. All twenty drivers qualified within 107%, including Giovanni Lavaggi at his home race.

Sunday warm-up

McLaren led warm-up, but Gerhard Berger damaged his Benetton after running onto the dust at the pit exit and hitting the barrier. The car was repaired for the race. The smaller tyre stacks remained in place, and avoiding them would become one of the afternoon’s defining challenges.

What happened in the 1996 Italian Grand Prix?

Jean Alesi made a superb start to lead, but Damon Hill soon moved ahead. Tyres knocked loose from the chicane stacks caused trouble almost immediately: David Coulthard retired and both Häkkinen and Jacques Villeneuve needed repairs. Damon Hill then hit a stack himself and retired from the lead.

Jean Alesi took over at the front, but Michael Schumacher‘s pace around the pit stops put Ferrari ahead. Eddie Irvine also fell victim to the tyre barriers. Michael Schumacher clipped a stack late in the race but continued without losing the lead.

Michael Schumacher won ahead of Jean Alesi, with Häkkinen recovering to third. Martin Brundle, Rubens Barrichello and Pedro Diniz completed the points. Jacques Villeneuve finished seventh, so Damon Hill‘s championship lead remained unchanged despite his retirement. The title would have to wait, while Monza celebrated Ferrari‘s back-to-back victories.

After the race, Damon Hill headed the drivers’ standings with 81 points, followed by Jacques Villeneuve on 68. Williams led the constructors’ table on 149, with Benetton on 61.
