Championship background

Damon Hill arrived at round 5 leading the 1996 F1 World Championship on 33 points, with Jacques Villeneuve on 22. Williams headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 55 points.

Race entries

The driver line-ups were unchanged. Luca Badoer received Forti‘s new FG03, while Andrea Montermini began the weekend with the older car. Ferrari brought an improved V10 for its home appearance, but the team would have to balance its extra performance against doubts about race-distance reliability.

Free Practice

Friday began on a damp surface after morning rain. Resurfacing work had removed some of Imola‘s bumps, giving the teams a different starting point for their settings. Ferrari‘s new engine and revised clutch were among the developments to assess as grip improved.

Michael Schumacher headed the afternoon running despite ending his session in the gravel. Ukyo Katayama‘s engine failure prompted a red flag, while Eddie Irvine spun and narrowly avoided an encounter with Pedro Lamy. Rubens Barrichello and Jacques Villeneuve were closest on the combined times, but Ferrari had made the strongest initial impression.

Saturday’s preparations were less straightforward for Häkkinen, whose McLaren suffered a gearbox failure during the morning. Benetton also continued searching for stability and tyre temperature after a poor Friday. Jean Alesi and Gerhard Berger found the car more manageable with fuel aboard than in a light qualifying configuration.

Damon Hill and Michael Schumacher finished morning practice separated by just three thousandths of a second. Williams had enjoyed comparatively clean running, while Ferrari‘s new engine offered a genuine single-lap threat. Sauber‘s drivers took different approaches to its electronic throttle, with Heinz-Harald Frentzen opting against the system Johnny Herbert continued to use.

Qualifying

Michael Schumacher claimed his first Ferrari pole with a 1:26.890, ahead of Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve. A rear suspension failure then sent him off, but his fastest lap stood. David Coulthard took fourth for McLaren, followed by Jean Alesi and Eddie Irvine.

Luca Badoer qualified the new Forti, but Andrea Montermini missed the 107% threshold. Ferrari‘s pole was a major encouragement for the home supporters, although the team planned to use the more proven engine for Sunday’s race.

Sunday warm-up

Williams led the warm-up, while Ferrari reverted to its older engine specification for the race. Jean Alesi damaged the front of his Benetton after going off at Piratella and needed the spare car. Michael Schumacher‘s repaired Ferrari could not match Damon Hill‘s pace, tempering expectations after the excitement of pole.

What happened in the 1996 San Marino Grand Prix?

David Coulthard made a strong start and enjoyed a spell in the lead, but Damon Hill‘s race and pit-stop execution brought the Williams to the front. Jacques Villeneuve suffered a puncture after contact with Jean Alesi on the opening lap and had to fight back from near the rear.

Retirements steadily reduced the field. David Coulthard‘s McLaren stopped with an electrical problem, and Jacques Villeneuve eventually retired with suspension damage. An Arrows pit-stop accident injured a mechanic, adding a serious note to the afternoon.

Damon Hill secured his fourth victory of the season. Michael Schumacher held second despite a front brake seizing on the final lap, with Gerhard Berger third. Eddie Irvine, Rubens Barrichello and Jean Alesi completed the points.

After the race, Damon Hill headed the drivers’ standings with 43 points, followed by Jacques Villeneuve on 22. Williams led the constructors’ table on 65, with Ferrari on 25.
