Championship background

Damon Hill arrived at round 9 leading the 1996 F1 World Championship on 53 points, with Jacques Villeneuve on 32. Williams headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 85 points.

Race entries

The driver line-ups remained unchanged. Renault introduced an updated engine for its home race, while Williams revised its front end and rear suspension. Forti‘s financial difficulties were becoming increasingly serious; this would prove to be the team’s final Grand Prix start.

Free Practice

Olivier Panis led the first session on home ground, ahead of Jean Alesi and Michael Schumacher. There were several untidy moments: David Coulthard spun into the gravel, Jean Alesi scattered stones across the track, and Damon Hill bounced over a kerb. Damon Hill also experimented with small aerodynamic additions to his helmet.

Häkkinen snatched the day’s fastest time in the final moments, denying Olivier Panis the headline position. The chicane continued to catch drivers out, with Ukyo Katayama taking a trip through the gravel. Rubens Barrichello stopped with a technical problem, while Jos Verstappen‘s second spin ended his afternoon.

Saturday morning’s drizzle changed the task from refining dry-weather pace to coping with reduced grip. Rubens Barrichello emerged quickest in the combined session, showing that Friday’s order was no firm guide. The conditions also limited useful preparation for the dry qualifying contest that followed.

The final practice period left several teams still searching for a satisfactory balance. David Coulthard‘s weekend included further trouble at the barriers, while Forti was trying to recover from the telemetry problems that had severely restricted Friday running. At the front, Williams, Ferrari and Benetton prepared for a closely fought qualifying hour.

Qualifying

Michael Schumacher took pole with a 1:15.989, only 0.069 seconds ahead of Damon Hill. Jean Alesi and Gerhard Berger set identical times for third and fourth. Jacques Villeneuve crashed heavily at Estoril, bringing out the red flag, but escaped injury and continued in the spare car to qualify sixth.

Eddie Irvine‘s tenth-fastest time was deleted when his Ferrari‘s air deflectors were found to exceed the permitted height. He was allowed to start from the rear. The penalty left Ferrari with the contrasting prospect of one car on pole and the other at the back.

Eddie Irvine had qualified 10th, but had all his qualifying times deleted and was demoted to the back of the grid after one of the air deflectors on his Ferrari was found to be too tall.

Sunday warm-up

Warm-up was unusually eventful. Damon Hill collided with Heinz-Harald Frentzen, then went off again after taking the spare Williams. Michael Schumacher suffered brake trouble and also left the road, while Häkkinen and Giancarlo Fisichella made contact. The teams faced a busy final repair period before the race.

What happened in the 1996 French Grand Prix?

Michael Schumacher‘s engine failed on the formation lap, removing Damon Hill‘s most immediate rival before the race began. Damon Hill led away and controlled the afternoon. Eddie Irvine also retired early, completing another disappointing race for Ferrari.

Jacques Villeneuve worked his way forward from sixth and secured second, turning a bruising qualifying weekend into valuable points. Jean Alesi resisted Gerhard Berger to finish third as Renault-powered cars occupied the first four places at the engine manufacturer’s home race.

Häkkinen and David Coulthard completed the points. Johnny Herbert was later disqualified because his Sauber‘s aerodynamic deflectors failed the technical checks. Damon Hill‘s sixth win of the season extended his advantage as the championship moved towards his home race at Silverstone.

After the race, Damon Hill headed the drivers’ standings with 63 points, followed by Jacques Villeneuve on 38. Williams led the constructors’ table on 101, with Ferrari on 35.
