Championship background

Michael Schumacher arrived at round 12 leading the 1995 F1 World Championship on 66 points, with Damon Hill on 51. Benetton headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 84 points.

Race entries

The teams retained their Spa line-ups for Monza. Ferrari arrived with Gerhard Berger and Jean Alesi still chasing a home victory, while Johnny Herbert sought to build on his Silverstone success alongside Michael Schumacher at Benetton. Both Pacifics and both Fortis were among the 24 cars entered.

Friday Free Practice

Rain exposed drainage problems on the resurfaced circuit on Friday, discouraging running during the opening half-hour. The limited useful track time made it harder to settle the cars for Monza‘s combination of heavy braking, kerbs and long straights. Improving conditions later in the day gave the teams a better opportunity to prepare for the first qualifying session.

Saturday Qualifying

The leading drivers waited through much of the opening half of Saturday’s session before committing to their runs. David Coulthard secured pole ahead of Michael Schumacher and Gerhard Berger, with Damon Hill fourth after another imperfect performance. Sunday warm-up

Jean Alesi led the warm-up, offering encouragement to the home crowd. A collision involving Andrea Montermini and Mark Blundell added repair work, although both were able to take their places for the start. Most teams planned a single fuel stop, while Tyrrell favoured two, creating a strategic difference beneath the gathering cloud.

What happened in the 1995 Italian Grand Prix?

David Coulthard spun off on the formation lap, but a multi-car accident brought the first start to a halt and allowed him to rejoin the restarted race in the spare Williams. His reprieve was brief: a wheel-bearing problem ended his challenge. Later, Damon Hill and Michael Schumacher collided while negotiating traffic, taking both title rivals out.

Ferrari then appeared to have the race in its hands. Instead, a camera mounting detached from Jean Alesi‘s car and damaged Gerhard Berger‘s suspension, forcing the Austrian to retire. Jean Alesi continued in front until a wheel-bearing failure with eight laps remaining ended the home team’s hopes and handed the lead to Johnny Herbert.

Johnny Herbert brought his Benetton home ahead of Häkkinen and Heinz-Harald Frentzen, whose third place gave Sauber its first podium. Mark Blundell, Mika Salo and Jean-Christophe Boullion completed the points, the latter taking sixth after Massimiliano Papis lost out on the final lap. Damon Hill later received a suspended one-race ban for the collision with Michael Schumacher.

After the race, Michael Schumacher headed the drivers’ standings with 66 points, followed by Damon Hill on 51. Benetton led the constructors’ table on 94, with Williams on 74.
