Championship background

Michael Schumacher arrived at round 6 leading the 1995 F1 World Championship on 34 points, with Damon Hill on 29. Benetton headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 36 points.

Race entries

Simtek‘s financial difficulties kept it out of Canada, reducing the field to twenty-four cars. Its absence proved permanent. Jean-Christophe Boullion continued at Sauber after his Monaco debut, while Mark Blundell remained alongside Häkkinen at McLaren.

Friday Free Practice

The bumpy surface was a major concern as the teams began Friday’s dry running. Benetton arrived with revised suspension geometry and a new front wing, while McLaren had removed the small wing from its engine cover. Establishing a stable platform over the bumps was therefore an important part of the preparation, beyond the contest for the quickest lap.

Friday Qualifying

Michael Schumacher took provisional pole on Friday with a lap that would survive the second session. Benetton‘s lead driver looked firmly in command, while the Williams pair faced a difficult task closing the gap. The performance also put Renault on course for its hundredth Formula 1 pole.

Saturday Free Practice

Temperatures rose on Saturday, making it harder to improve on Friday’s performance. Williams continued to search for a satisfactory balance, while Ferrari also had work to do to get the best from its tyres. The changing conditions reinforced the value of the first qualifying session and complicated the final preparations for the grid contest.

Saturday Qualifying

The warmer Saturday conditions left Michael Schumacher‘s benchmark intact. Damon Hill and David Coulthard completed the leading three, ahead of Gerhard Berger, Jean Alesi and Johnny Herbert. Gerhard Berger exceeded the twelve-lap allowance, although his Friday time already secured his position. The two McLarens and two Jordans completed the top ten.

Sunday warm-up

Rain arrived on Sunday morning and transformed the warm-up. Jean Alesi was fastest, with Rubens Barrichello splitting the Ferraris, while both Williams drivers spun. Damon Hill returned to the circuit after an initial mistake but then became stuck in the gravel. The wet session gave little reassurance that the preceding dry running would translate smoothly into race performance.

What happened in the 1995 Canadian Grand Prix?

Michael Schumacher led away, while Häkkinen and Johnny Herbert collided at the hairpin and David Coulthard spun out shortly afterwards. Jean Alesi passed Damon Hill to move into second. Damon Hill later retired with a hydraulic problem, and Gerhard Berger lost ground before his own race ended in contact with Martin Brundle.

Michael Schumacher appeared to have the race won until an electrical fault left him stuck in gear. A lengthy stop to change the steering wheel and reset the system handed Jean Alesi the lead. The Benetton returned to finish fifth, behind Olivier Panis, while Rubens Barrichello and Eddie Irvine secured second and third. Gianni Morbidelli took the final point.

Jean Alesi‘s delight was shared around the paddock and by the Canadian crowd, although spectators entering the circuit created a dangerous finish. The final classification was taken at 68 laps rather than the scheduled 69. When the Ferrari stopped on the slowing-down lap, Michael Schumacher gave the winner a lift back to the pits, completing an unforgettable birthday.

After the race, Michael Schumacher headed the drivers’ standings with 36 points, followed by Damon Hill on 29. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 41, with Benetton on 38.
