Championship background
Jacques Villeneuve arrived at round 4 leading the 1997 F1 World Championship on 20 points, with David Coulthard on 10. Williams headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 20 points.
Race entries
The field remained unchanged for the first European round. Gerhard Berger prepared for his two-hundredth Grand Prix start, while several teams brought developments. Williams introduced power steering, Ferrari had a revised engine for Saturday, and Minardi arrived with updated bodywork and a revised Hart engine for qualifying.
Free Practice
Schumacher set the early pace for Ferrari, but Jacques Villeneuve lost running with a throttle-coupling problem. Williams consequently had less time to establish its balance. The demanding braking zones also made this an important first test of the team’s revised brake hardware and power steering in a Grand Prix weekend.
Eddie Irvine narrowly displaced Schumacher at the top, with the Benettons next. Both Jordan drivers went into the gravel at Rivazza, and Olivier Panis also had an excursion. Jos Verstappen could not improve after trouble with the pneumatic gearshift system, leaving Tyrrell near the back despite its additional wings.

David Coulthard crashed heavily during Saturday morning practice and needed a medical check before being cleared to continue. Jacques Villeneuve also suffered a radiator leak. The incidents disrupted preparations as Williams began to show the pace that had been less apparent during Friday’s setup work.
Heinz-Harald Frentzen finished Saturday practice ahead of Jacques Villeneuve, strengthening his challenge within Williams. McLaren faced the more immediate task of preparing its spare for David Coulthard after the morning accident. Ferrari evaluated its revised engine, but Williams would enter qualifying with the strongest claim to the front row.

Sunday warm-up
Heavy rain gave the teams their first competitive wet-weather comparison of the weekend. Heinz-Harald Frentzen was fastest as conditions eased, using intermediate tyres. Rubens Barrichello hit the barrier early, but Stewart repaired the car for the race. The afternoon would be much drier, leaving teams to reconsider the relevance of their morning settings.

What happened in the 1997 San Marino Grand Prix?
Jacques Villeneuve led at the start, with Schumacher ahead of Heinz-Harald Frentzen. The decisive change came around the first stops: Heinz-Harald Frentzen used clear track and fast laps to move ahead of both rivals, emerging narrowly in front of the Ferrari.
Jacques Villeneuve later developed gearbox trouble and retired. Heinz-Harald Frentzen kept control despite concern over his brakes and Schumacher’s late pressure, taking his first Grand Prix victory by just over a second. Gerhard Berger‘s milestone race had already ended with a spin.
Eddie Irvine beat Giancarlo Fisichella to third through the later pit-stop sequence. Jean Alesi and Häkkinen completed the points, with Nicola Larini seventh. The result gave Heinz-Harald Frentzen a major boost after a difficult start to his Williams career.
After the race, Jacques Villeneuve headed the drivers’ standings with 20 points, followed by Michael Schumacher on 14. Williams led the constructors’ table on 30, with Ferrari on 24.
