Championship background
Michael Schumacher arrived at round 15 leading the 1997 F1 World Championship on 68 points, with Jacques Villeneuve on 67. Williams headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 98 points.
Race entries
Olivier Panis returned to Prost after recovering from the leg injuries sustained in Canada. Jarno Trulli stepped aside after his impressive spell as substitute. Elsewhere, the drivers were unchanged, while David Richards arrived to take over the management of Benetton.
Free Practice
A dusty surface made the opening running less straightforward than the dry weather suggested. McLaren worked with a revised setup, while Olivier Panis reacquainted himself with a Grand Prix weekend after extensive rehabilitation and testing. The early priority was a predictable balance on a circuit offering inconsistent grip.
Häkkinen finished Friday fastest, underlining McLaren‘s promise, with Rubens Barrichello and Gerhard Berger next. Jacques Villeneuve was only twelfth as Williams continued to improve its car. The championship contenders had work to do, while Stewart‘s pace again raised the question of whether its reliability could match its speed.

David Coulthard suffered an engine failure immediately after leaving the pits, losing the whole first Saturday session. McLaren‘s mechanics began an urgent change. The interruption was particularly costly because the team still needed running to establish the settings that would allow him to challenge Häkkinen.
A rapid engine change gave David Coulthard roughly twenty minutes of the final session, but left him short of preparation. Heinz-Harald Frentzen finished the morning fastest, just ahead of Häkkinen. Williams had improved enough to threaten McLaren, setting up a close qualifying contest.

Qualifying
Häkkinen claimed his first Formula 1 pole with a 1:16.602, narrowly ahead of Jacques Villeneuve and Heinz-Harald Frentzen. It was McLaren‘s first pole since 1993 and the first for a Mercedes-powered car since 1955. Giancarlo Fisichella qualified fourth.
Schumacher could manage only fifth, with David Coulthard sixth after his disrupted morning. Olivier Panis returned in eleventh, while Jan Magnussen recovered from engine trouble to take twelfth in the spare Stewart. The front three were separated by less than fourteen hundredths.

Sunday warm-up
The McLarens were fastest again, but Jacques Villeneuve‘s spare developed a fuel-supply problem. Shinji Nakano also needed an engine change after alternator-belt trouble. Häkkinen entered the race on his birthday with both pole position and convincing pace, hoping reliability would finally allow him to convert them.

What happened in the 1997 Luxembourg Grand Prix?
David Coulthard made a superb start to join Häkkinen at the front. Behind them, contact between the Jordans sent Ralf Schumacher‘s car over Michael Schumacher‘s Ferrari. The championship leader tried to continue but retired with suspension damage.
McLaren appeared in control until both Mercedes engines failed in quick succession around mid-distance. Jacques Villeneuve inherited the lead. The Stewarts also retired, while Damon Hill lost time at his stop, allowing the Renault-powered cars to fill the leading positions.
Jacques Villeneuve won ahead of Jean Alesi, Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Gerhard Berger. Pedro Diniz held off Olivier Panis for fifth, with the returning Frenchman earning a point. Jacques Villeneuve now led Schumacher by nine points with two rounds remaining.
After the race, Jacques Villeneuve headed the drivers’ standings with 77 points, followed by Michael Schumacher on 68. Williams led the constructors’ table on 112, with Ferrari on 86.
