Michael Schumacher strengthened his championship challenge with victory at the French Grand Prix. Heinz-Harald Frentzen finished second, while Eddie Irvine held on to third through a late shower that turned the closing laps into a test of judgement and control.

Championship background
Michael Schumacher arrived at round 8 leading the 1997 F1 World Championship on 37 points, with Jacques Villeneuve on 30. Ferrari headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 51 points.
Race entries
Olivier Panis‘s injuries prompted Prost to recruit Jarno Trulli from Minardi, where Tarso Marques returned in his place. Norberto Fontana made his debut for Sauber after Gianni Morbidelli broke his arm in testing. Alexander Wurz continued at Benetton while Gerhard Berger recovered, creating several unfamiliar combinations for the French weekend.
Free Practice
Wet conditions gave the Bridgestone runners an early opportunity, with Rubens Barrichello and Damon Hill leading the opening session. The rain made balance and traction more immediately useful than outright dry-weather speed. Teams also had to prepare for forecasts suggesting that unsettled weather could persist through the weekend.
The drying track transformed the order. Schumacher finished almost a second and a half clear of Giancarlo Fisichella as the timing of a run became crucial. Numerous spins reflected the changing grip, and the large gaps offered a misleading guide to the field’s underlying pace.

Jacques Villeneuve set the pace as Saturday offered a more useful dry-weather comparison. Ralf Schumacher‘s preparations were restricted by hydraulic-pressure trouble, leaving Jordan short of meaningful laps. Tyrrell‘s drivers were closely matched, but the team’s wider concern was engine reliability after Friday’s problems.
Jacques Villeneuve remained fastest but crashed heavily during the morning, forcing Williams into repairs and leaving him dependent on the spare at the start of qualifying. The lost preparation mattered as temperatures rose and grip became harder to find. Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Ferrari were well placed to take advantage.

Qualifying
Schumacher claimed pole with a 1:14.548, ahead of Heinz-Harald Frentzen and his brother Ralf. Ferrari‘s new front wing helped its balance, and Schumacher elected to save tyres rather than make another run as the track slowed. Eddie Irvine qualified fifth.
Jacques Villeneuve returned to his repaired race car during the session but could manage only fourth. Jarno Trulli impressed with sixth on his Prost debut, while Alexander Wurz outqualified Jean Alesi. Another engine failure interrupted Jos Verstappen‘s session and deepened Tyrrell‘s concern over the newer Cosworth unit.

Sunday warm-up
Showers left much of warm-up damp before Eddie Irvine used slicks to set the best time late on. Both Minardi drivers hit the barriers, adding to the team’s workload. The mixed conditions reinforced the need to prepare for rain, although the field would start the Grand Prix on dry tyres.

What happened in the 1997 French Grand Prix?
Schumacher established control from pole, with Heinz-Harald Frentzen unable to sustain a challenge and Eddie Irvine moving into third. Damon Hill damaged his front wing after running off at the opening corner. The leading order then remained relatively settled until rain arrived in the closing stages.
Several drivers changed to wet tyres, while others tried to nurse slicks to the finish. Schumacher survived a spin without losing the lead. Behind him, the struggle for the minor points became increasingly frantic, with David Coulthard losing ground after a clash with Jean Alesi.
Jacques Villeneuve caught Eddie Irvine but spun while attacking at the final corner, recovering to finish fourth ahead of Jean Alesi. Ralf Schumacher took the final point. Ferrari left with another victory and a second car on the podium, extending Schumacher’s advantage in the title race.
After the race, Michael Schumacher headed the drivers’ standings with 47 points, followed by Jacques Villeneuve on 33. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 65, with Williams on 52.
