Gerhard Berger made an outstanding return to Formula 1 with victory at the German Grand Prix. His tenth and final win was also Benetton‘s last, with Michael Schumacher second and Mika Häkkinen third at the Hockenheimring.

All times are local. The race time is the scheduled start; weather delays and interruptions are described below.
Championship background
Michael Schumacher arrived at round 10 leading the 1997 F1 World Championship on 47 points, with Jacques Villeneuve on 43. Ferrari headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 65 points.
Race entries
Gerhard Berger returned to Benetton after missing three races through illness, with Alexander Wurz stepping back into his testing role. His comeback also followed the death of his father. The rest of the field remained unchanged as the teams prepared low-downforce cars for Hockenheim’s long straights.
Free Practice
Showers disrupted Friday’s opening session, leaving drivers to judge a slippery surface and narrow windows for improvement. Ralf Schumacher took advantage of a drier spell to go fastest. Häkkinen and Jean Alesi did not run in the first session, so both began the weekend with less information than their rivals.
The weather continued to frustrate clean comparisons, and Ralf Schumacher‘s earlier time remained the day’s best. Williams struggled with understeer rather than showing its usual authority. The varying conditions made a low position less alarming in isolation, but the team’s balance problems required genuine attention before qualifying.

Jordan again looked competitive on Saturday, with its strong straight-line performance well suited to the circuit. Rubens Barrichello lost his engine cover during the morning, an unsettling interruption at high speed. Stewart also faced engine reliability problems, adding another concern to its preparations.
Ralf Schumacher finished the morning just two thousandths ahead of Häkkinen. Sauber showed impressive straight-line speed but struggled for traction, demonstrating that a small wing alone would not produce a complete lap. Gerhard Berger‘s return was gathering momentum as Benetton found a balance suited to both the chicanes and the stadium section.

Qualifying
Gerhard Berger claimed pole with a 1:41.873, only 0.023 seconds ahead of Giancarlo Fisichella. Häkkinen qualified third, followed by Schumacher. It was a stirring response from Gerhard Berger after his enforced absence and gave Benetton its first pole since Suzuka in 1995.
Jacques Villeneuve struggled for straight-line speed and switched to the spare Williams, but remained ninth. Heinz-Harald Frentzen managed fifth. Ralf Schumacher could not reproduce his practice position, while spins disrupted the closing efforts of Jean Alesi and David Coulthard.

Sunday warm-up
Overnight rain left a damp track that dried during warm-up. Jacques Villeneuve was fastest and much happier with his Williams, while Gerhard Berger spun. Schumacher evaluated a compromise setup with further rain still possible, but the Grand Prix would ultimately take place in dry conditions.

What happened in the 1997 German Grand Prix?
Gerhard Berger led from the start as contact between Eddie Irvine and Heinz-Harald Frentzen also damaged David Coulthard‘s race. Benetton‘s two-stop strategy allowed Gerhard Berger to push hard, while Giancarlo Fisichella remained a threat with one planned stop. Jacques Villeneuve later spun out, costing him another chance to score.
Giancarlo Fisichella briefly moved ahead after Gerhard Berger‘s final stop, but the Austrian quickly reclaimed the lead. A puncture then ended the Jordan driver’s challenge, with the resulting damage forcing his retirement. Schumacher moved into second.
Gerhard Berger completed an emotional victory ahead of Schumacher and Häkkinen. Jarno Trulli took fourth, followed by Ralf Schumacher and Jean Alesi. Schumacher extended his championship advantage to ten points, but the afternoon belonged to Gerhard Berger and his remarkable comeback.
After the race, Michael Schumacher headed the drivers’ standings with 53 points, followed by Jacques Villeneuve on 43. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 71, with Williams on 62.
