Championship background

Bridgestone entered as a full-season tyre supplier to challenge Goodyear. The field still raced on slick tyres, and qualifying remained a single one-hour session with a twelve-lap limit and the 107 per cent threshold. Points went to the first six finishers, with no fastest-lap bonus.

Race entries

Reigning champion Damon Hill moved to Arrows, with Heinz-Harald Frentzen replacing him at Williams. Stewart entered with Rubens Barrichello and Jan Magnussen, while Lola brought Vincenzo Sospiri and Ricardo Rosset. Ligier became Prost, pairing Olivier Panis with newcomer Shinji Nakano. Ralf Schumacher joined Giancarlo Fisichella at Jordan, Jarno Trulli debuted for Minardi alongside Ukyo Katayama, and Nicola Larini joined Sauber. Jos Verstappen moved to Tyrrell alongside Mika Salo.

Free Practice

The first practice session brought an early reminder that reliability could shape the opening weekend. Damon Hill stopped after only six laps, while Häkkinen crashed and the session was interrupted. Eddie Irvine also spun. Prost had work to do between sessions, replacing the Mugen-Honda engine in Shinji Nakano‘s car.

Schumacher finished Friday fastest as Ferrari made an encouraging start. Olivier Panis, Damon Hill and Jan Magnussen all spun in the afternoon, while Pedro Diniz stopped with a technical problem. Tyrrell traced Jos Verstappen‘s difficulties to inadequate brake pressure, giving the mechanics a specific fault to address before Saturday’s running.

Rosset’s heavy accident interrupted Saturday’s opening session, adding to Lola‘s difficult debut. Damon Hill again lost track time to gearbox trouble. With the new cars still revealing their weaknesses, every interruption reduced the opportunity to establish a dependable setup before the twelve-lap qualifying limit came into play.

Jacques Villeneuve produced a striking 1:28.594 in Saturday practice, comfortably quicker than the pole lap he would manage later. Tyrrell also improved its setup during the morning, although that progress would disappear in qualifying as grip became harder to find. The changing track conditions made the morning’s gains difficult to preserve.

Qualifying

Jacques Villeneuve claimed pole with a 1:29.369, leaving Heinz-Harald Frentzen more than 1.7 seconds behind. Schumacher and David Coulthard shared the second row. A late collision involving Gerhard Berger and Nicola Larini interrupted the session and left little time for final attempts.

Damon Hill narrowly qualified after another troubled session. Pedro Diniz missed the 107 per cent threshold but was admitted on the strength of his practice performance. Neither Lola qualified, leaving the new team’s drivers on the sidelines.

Sunday warm-up

Williams again led warm-up, but the gaps were closer and Johnny Herbert and Olivier Panis showed encouraging pace. Cooler, cloudier conditions changed the outlook from Saturday’s heat. Williams prepared a two-stop strategy, while several of its Goodyear-shod rivals aimed to make only one scheduled visit to the pits.

What happened in the 1997 Australian Grand Prix?

Damon Hill stopped on the formation lap with a throttle problem. At the first corner, contact involving Eddie Irvine, Jacques Villeneuve and Johnny Herbert eliminated all three from contention. Heinz-Harald Frentzen escaped into the lead, with David Coulthard and Schumacher behind.

Heinz-Harald Frentzen‘s two-stop plan left him needing to recover ground after his second visit, which was delayed by a wheel problem. Jean Alesi ran out of fuel after missing Benetton‘s calls to pit. Schumacher also needed an extra fuel stop, briefly promoting Heinz-Harald Frentzen before brake failure sent the Williams into the gravel.

David Coulthard won ahead of Schumacher and Häkkinen, giving McLaren its first victory since the 1993 Australian Grand Prix. Gerhard Berger, Olivier Panis and Nicola Larini completed the points. It was also McLaren‘s first win with Mercedes power.

After the race, David Coulthard headed the drivers’ standings with 10 points, followed by Michael Schumacher on 6. McLaren led the constructors’ table on 14, with Ferrari on 6.
