Championship background

Michael Schumacher arrived at round 4 leading the 1994 F1 World Championship on 30 points, with Damon Hill on 7. Benetton headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 30 points.

Formula 1 arrived with safety at the centre of its discussions. New pit-lane restrictions were introduced and further changes to the cars were announced for subsequent races. Before the start, the front row of the physical grid was left vacant in tribute to Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger.

Race entries

Williams and Simtek each entered one car following the deaths of Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger. Jean Alesi returned to Ferrari, while de Andrea de Cesaris continued at Jordan for the final race of Eddie Irvine‘s suspension. Local driver Olivier Beretta made his first Monaco Grand Prix appearance. Sauber withdrew both cars after Karl Wendlinger‘s Thursday accident.

Thursday Free Practice

Karl Wendlinger‘s serious crash at the harbour chicane overshadowed Thursday practice. He suffered head injuries and was taken to hospital, prompting Sauber to withdraw. Michael Schumacher also had an interrupted morning when his engine failed, but switched cars and still set the quickest time. The sporting programme continued against profound concern for Karl Wendlinger‘s condition.

Thursday Qualifying

Michael Schumacher headed Thursday qualifying, while Martin Brundle put McLaren second ahead of Häkkinen. The Benetton had recovered from its morning engine trouble and immediately established a substantial advantage. Damon Hill had more work to do as Williams tried to make its sole car respond consistently around the street circuit.

Saturday Free Practice

Michael Schumacher remained fastest on Saturday morning, with Häkkinen closer behind. Williams continued trying to improve Damon Hill‘s difficult ride over the bumps, while Martin Brundle‘s weekend became less promising as differential problems upset the McLaren‘s balance. Finding a car the driver could trust between the barriers was especially important after Thursday’s events.

Sunday warm-up

Michael Schumacher led the warm-up, with Häkkinen again his nearest challenger. Most teams prepared for two fuel stops, making pit work important on a circuit where overtaking remained difficult. Later, the drivers gathered for a minute’s silence in memory of Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger before taking their places for the race.

What happened in the 1994 Monaco Grand Prix?

Michael Schumacher escaped the opening-corner trouble as Damon Hill and Häkkinen made contact and both retired. Gianni Morbidelli and Pierluigi Martini also collided, removing two more cars. Gerhard Berger initially ran second, but Michael Schumacher was already building a lead that nobody would seriously challenge.

Oil from Mark Blundell‘s retiring Tyrrell caught Gerhard Berger out at Sainte Dévote and helped Martin Brundle move into contention for second. The McLaren needed an additional stop after debris obstructed its cooling, but Martin Brundle recovered the position through the remaining pit-stop sequence. Gerhard Berger completed the podium.

De Andrea de Cesaris finished fourth ahead of Jean Alesi, with Michele Alboreto taking sixth for his final Formula 1 point. Michael Schumacher completed the full 78 laps in front and set fastest lap as well, achieving his first Grand Slam. Four wins from four races left him firmly in control of the championship.

After the race, Michael Schumacher headed the drivers’ standings with 40 points, followed by Gerhard Berger on 10. Benetton led the constructors’ table on 40, with Ferrari on 22.
