Championship background
Michael Schumacher arrived at round 16 leading the 1994 F1 World Championship on 92 points, with Damon Hill on 91. Williams headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 108 points.
Race entries
Delétraz made his debut for Larrousse in place of Erik Comas, while Domenico Schiattarella returned to Simtek after Taki Inoue‘s home appearance in Japan. Elsewhere the line-ups were unchanged. The original Lotus team was approaching its final Grand Prix, adding another poignant farewell to the season finale.
Friday Free Practice
Damon Hill set the pace on Friday morning as the championship rivals began their final preparations. Adelaide’s street layout placed a premium on traction and braking, and Ferrari struggled to find a convincing balance. Delétraz faced an especially steep learning curve in his first Grand Prix weekend, while the leading teams concentrated on getting their cars comfortable over the bumps.

What happened in the 1994 Australian Grand Prix?
Michael Schumacher and Damon Hill both passed Nigel Mansell at the start and pulled clear, the championship challengers matching each other through the opening stages. Their contest ended on lap 36. Michael Schumacher ran wide and hit the wall, then returned to the track; Damon Hill attempted to pass at the next corner and the two cars collided.
Michael Schumacher retired immediately. Damon Hill reached the pits, but damaged front suspension ended his race as well. With neither scoring, Michael Schumacher retained his one-point advantage and secured the drivers’ title. The stewards imposed no penalty, although the collision remained one of Formula 1’s most disputed championship-deciding incidents.
Nigel Mansell and Gerhard Berger fought for the race victory, with Nigel Mansell prevailing to take his 31st and final Grand Prix win. Martin Brundle finished third ahead of Rubens Barrichello, Olivier Panis and Jean Alesi, while Häkkinen crashed late after brake trouble. Williams secured the constructors’ championship, bringing a season marked by tragedy and controversy to its close.
After the race, Michael Schumacher headed the drivers’ standings with 92 points, followed by Damon Hill on 91. Williams led the constructors’ table on 118, with Benetton on 103.
