Damon Hill delivered a home victory at the 1994 British Grand Prix, achieving the result his father Graham had never managed. Michael Schumacher finished second on the road but was later disqualified, leaving Jean Alesi and Mika Häkkinen alongside Damon Hill in the final top three.

Championship background
Michael Schumacher arrived at round 8 leading the 1994 F1 World Championship on 66 points, with Damon Hill on 29. Benetton headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 67 points.
Silverstone had been revised in response to the renewed focus on safety. Changes included a slower Stowe and a chicane at Abbey, giving the drivers a different rhythm through familiar ground. Ferrari also arrived with further developments as it sought to challenge Williams and Benetton.
Race entries
David Coulthard returned to Williams as Nigel Mansell resumed his American racing commitments. Jos Verstappen remained alongside Michael Schumacher at Benetton, and Jean-Marc Gounon continued with Simtek after his encouraging finish in France. Damon Hill carried the home crowd’s hopes into a weekend that began with an unwelcome mechanical scare.
Friday Free Practice
Damon Hill‘s Friday practice began badly when a front-suspension assembly problem sent him off on his first lap. Michael Schumacher set the pace, while Rubens Barrichello and Ukyo Katayama showed encouraging speed. Development work continued throughout the field: Erik Comas tried a revised Larrousse floor, but the team abandoned it after Friday because it had not delivered the hoped-for improvement.

Saturday Free Practice
Gerhard Berger led Saturday practice as Ferrari‘s recent progress became increasingly evident. Damon Hill returned to productive running after Friday’s setback, preparing for a remarkably close afternoon contest.

Sunday warm-up
David Coulthard was fastest in the warm-up, strengthening Williams‘ hopes for the race. Gerhard Berger, however, suspected something was wrong with his Ferrari but chose to retain it because he preferred its engine to the spare car’s. The decision would become significant when engine trouble later ended his afternoon. Teams also faced the usual choice between longer fuel stints and the pace available from additional stops.

What happened in the 1994 British Grand Prix?
David Coulthard stalled before the start, forcing another formation lap and sending him to the back. Eddie Irvine‘s Jordan then failed, while Martin Brundle‘s engine expired spectacularly when the race finally began. Damon Hill led away, but Michael Schumacher‘s overtaking during the formation laps soon brought a five-second stop-go penalty.
Benetton disputed the penalty and Michael Schumacher remained out after being shown the black flag. He eventually served the stop-go, leaving Damon Hill with a decisive advantage. Damon Hill maintained his pace to take an emotional home win, while Michael Schumacher crossed the line second and Jean Alesi third.
Häkkinen and Rubens Barrichello collided at the final corner but both reached the finish, the Jordan crossing the line through the pit lane. Michael Schumacher‘s subsequent disqualification promoted Jean Alesi to second and Häkkinen to third, followed by Rubens Barrichello, David Coulthard and Ukyo Katayama. The FIA also imposed a two-race ban on Michael Schumacher, later served in Italy and Portugal after his appeal failed.
After the race, Michael Schumacher headed the drivers’ standings with 66 points, followed by Damon Hill on 39. Benetton led the constructors’ table on 67, with Williams on 43.
