Championship background
Michael Schumacher arrived at round 6 leading the 1994 F1 World Championship on 46 points, with Damon Hill on 17. Benetton headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 46 points.
The latest safety measures brought another round of changes: a higher minimum weight, revised fuel requirements and openings to remove the pressurising effect of the engine airboxes. A temporary chicane also altered the circuit. The teams arrived needing to establish how their modified cars would respond.
Race entries
Sauber returned to two cars, with de Andrea de Cesaris standing in for the injured Karl Wendlinger. Simtek fielded David Brabham alone after Montermini’s accident in Spain. David Coulthard continued alongside Damon Hill at Williams, with negotiations over a return for Nigel Mansell adding another talking point to the weekend.
Friday Free Practice
Jean Alesi led a Ferrari one-two on Friday morning, an encouraging change from the team’s difficult handling in Spain. The 412 T1 was more convincing here, but its interpretation of the new airbox requirements attracted scrutiny. Ferrari had opened slots in the engine cover rather than following the larger cut-outs used by rivals, making its strong opening pace a subject of debate as well as celebration.

Friday Qualifying
Jean Alesi carried his Friday practice form into qualifying to claim provisional pole ahead of Michael Schumacher. Häkkinen was third, but Williams had yet to find its best pace. Ferrari‘s performance set up a genuine contest for the front row rather than another comfortable Benetton advantage.

Saturday Free Practice
Jean Alesi remained quickest in Saturday practice, even as Ferrari had to revise its airbox openings. The altered arrangement cost straight-line speed, increasing the importance of the car’s handling through the slower sections. Williams also worked to improve after a disappointing Friday, while Lehto struggled to find confidence in the balance of his Benetton.

Sunday warm-up
Martin Brundle produced a striking warm-up performance, going faster than his own qualifying best and putting McLaren ahead of the Ferraris. It was a promising response to a difficult grid position. Lehto opted to race the spare Benetton, which he found easier to drive, while the possibility of rain complicated final preparations for the afternoon.

What happened in the 1994 Canadian Grand Prix?
Michael Schumacher kept the lead at the start, with Jean Alesi and Gerhard Berger following. David Coulthard got ahead of Damon Hill and resisted his team-mate before allowing him through. Damon Hill then passed Gerhard Berger and used the pit-stop sequence to move ahead of Jean Alesi, but Michael Schumacher had already established control.
A brief threat of rain did not overturn the race. Häkkinen pursued Gerhard Berger until his Peugeot engine failed late on, while mechanical trouble also ended a strong run for Gianni Morbidelli. Jean Alesi faced his own gearbox difficulties but held on to third ahead of Gerhard Berger.
Michael Schumacher won by almost forty seconds from Damon Hill. David Coulthard finished fifth to open his points account, while Christian Fittipaldi initially took sixth. The Footwork was subsequently disqualified for being underweight, promoting Lehto into the final points position. Benetton had regained its winning momentum after Spain.
After the race, Michael Schumacher headed the drivers’ standings with 56 points, followed by Damon Hill on 23. Benetton led the constructors’ table on 57, with Ferrari on 32.
