Championship background
Michael Schumacher arrived at round 13 leading the 1994 F1 World Championship on 76 points, with Damon Hill on 65. Benetton headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 85 points.
Race entries
Lehto continued alongside Jos Verstappen while Michael Schumacher served the second race of his suspension. Philippe Adams returned to Lotus in place of Alessandro Zanardi, while David Coulthard had another opportunity at Williams before Nigel Mansell‘s planned return. The championship contest remained finely balanced despite the leader’s absence.
Friday Free Practice
David Coulthard led Damon Hill in Friday practice as the drivers learned Estoril’s new slow section, introduced in place of the former Tanque corner. Williams experimented with wing arrangements for the revised lap, while McLaren restored the power steering it had set aside at the previous two races. The changes made this more than a routine return to familiar ground.

Saturday Free Practice
Damon Hill led Saturday morning after escaping unhurt from his alarming qualifying accident the previous afternoon. Williams again looked strong, with David Coulthard close behind. Wind made the track less predictable later in the day, and Ferrari continued searching for a satisfactory balance through the slow corners despite Gerhard Berger‘s provisional pole.

Sunday warm-up
David Coulthard headed another Williams one-two in the warm-up. Gerhard Berger was less comfortable with his Ferrari‘s handling and the team made adjustments before the start. His intended three-stop race would also put him on a different fuel programme from the Williams drivers, making the morning times only part of the picture.

What happened in the 1994 Portuguese Grand Prix?
Gerhard Berger led away, with David Coulthard beating Damon Hill into second. The Williams pair soon applied pressure, and Gerhard Berger‘s gearbox failure ended Ferrari‘s leading challenge. David Coulthard took over, but Damon Hill remained close as the pit-stop sequence unfolded.
Traffic provided the decisive opening. David Coulthard hesitated while approaching a slower car in the new section and Damon Hill moved through to take the lead. Jean Alesi‘s later collision with David Brabham removed the second Ferrari, leaving Williams to control the closing stages.
Damon Hill won ahead of David Coulthard and Häkkinen, with Rubens Barrichello fourth, Jos Verstappen fifth and Martin Brundle sixth. Olivier Panis was subsequently excluded for excessive plank wear. Williams moved ahead in the constructors’ standings, while Damon Hill‘s deficit to Michael Schumacher was reduced to a single point with three races remaining.
After the race, Michael Schumacher headed the drivers’ standings with 76 points, followed by Damon Hill on 75. Williams led the constructors’ table on 89, with Benetton on 87.
