Championship background
Michael Schumacher arrived at round 12 leading the 1994 F1 World Championship on 76 points, with Damon Hill on 55. Benetton headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 85 points.
The race went ahead after agreement over safety changes at Monza, including revisions to the Lesmo section. With Michael Schumacher absent, Damon Hill had a major opportunity to close the championship gap. Ferrari‘s recent speed also raised expectations among the home supporters.
Race entries
Lehto returned to Benetton as Michael Schumacher began his two-race suspension. Alessandro Zanardi reclaimed the second Lotus for his home event, and Yannick Dalmas replaced Philippe Alliot at Larrousse. Johnny Herbert had an upgraded Mugen engine in his Lotus, offering the struggling team a rare prospect of competing near the front.
Friday Free Practice
Damon Hill headed Friday practice, but Ferrari had prepared extensively for its home race. The two cars were testing different suspension arrangements, alongside aerodynamic changes for Monza‘s fast layout. Johnny Herbert‘s upgraded Mugen engine gave Lotus another development to assess, adding an intriguing midfield challenge to the familiar Ferrari–Williams contest.

Friday Qualifying
Jean Alesi set the Friday benchmark ahead of Damon Hill and David Coulthard. Eddie Irvine lost his times for exceeding the session’s lap allowance, leaving him needing a clean Saturday performance. Ferrari still had more pace to find, and the home crowd had reason to anticipate a strong second session.

Saturday Free Practice
Jean Alesi led Saturday practice as Ferrari‘s preparations began to pay off. Paul Belmondo‘s morning ended very differently: he crashed heavily enough to rule out further qualifying in the Pacific. With the grid decided by the best time from either day, that left him dependent on Friday’s lap and unable to respond as rivals improved.

Saturday Qualifying
Jean Alesi improved again to claim his first Formula 1 pole, with Gerhard Berger completing the front row. Damon Hill was third, but Johnny Herbert‘s fourth place was the surprise of the afternoon, demonstrating the promise of Lotus‘s new engine. David Coulthard and Olivier Panis followed, while Lehto qualified twentieth on his return.

Eddie Irvine ‘s Friday qualifying times were deleted because he completed 13 laps, one over the limit, during the session.
Paul Belmondo did not take part in the Saturday qualifying session after destroying his car in a crash in the morning’s practice session.
Sunday warm-up
Gerhard Berger suffered a heavy accident during the warm-up and underwent medical checks before being cleared to race. Ferrari prepared the spare for him, turning a final set-up session into an urgent recovery effort. Jean Alesi set the quickest time, but concern for his team-mate briefly overtook the excitement surrounding the team’s front-row lockout.

What happened in the 1994 Italian Grand Prix?
The first start ended in a red flag after Eddie Irvine hit Johnny Herbert at the opening chicane, triggering a pile-up. Johnny Herbert had to restart from the pit lane in the spare Lotus without the upgraded engine. At the second attempt Jean Alesi led Gerhard Berger, while another collision removed Jos Verstappen, Alessandro Zanardi and Gianni Morbidelli.
Jean Alesi pulled clear until his first stop, when a gearbox failure left him unable to rejoin. Gerhard Berger then lost time during his own stop, bringing Williams into command. David Coulthard moved aside for Damon Hill, and the pair looked set for a one-two as Gerhard Berger closed behind them.
David Coulthard ran out of fuel on the final lap, losing second but remaining classified sixth. Damon Hill won from Gerhard Berger and Häkkinen, with Rubens Barrichello fourth and Martin Brundle fifth. The victory reduced Damon Hill‘s deficit to Michael Schumacher to eleven points, while Lotus‘s promising weekend ended without the points it badly needed.
After the race, Michael Schumacher headed the drivers’ standings with 76 points, followed by Damon Hill on 65. Benetton led the constructors’ table on 85, with Williams on 73.
