Championship background
The ban on electronic driver aids, including active suspension and traction control, gave the teams a substantial engineering challenge. Race refuelling also returned for the first time since 1983, bringing fuel loads and pit-stop execution back into the strategic contest.
Race entries
Ayrton Senna joined Damon Hill at Williams following Prost‘s retirement, while Martin Brundle partnered Häkkinen at the newly Peugeot-powered McLaren team. Jos Verstappen deputised for the injured JJ Lehto at Benetton. Simtek and Pacific made their championship debuts, and Heinz-Harald Frentzen, Olivier Panis, Olivier Beretta and Roland Ratzenberger joined Jos Verstappen among the newcomers attempting to start their first Grand Prix.
Friday Free Practice
Ayrton Senna headed Friday practice, but Damon Hill lost valuable running when his onboard fire extinguisher discharged. Mark Blundell‘s fourth place offered Tyrrell encouragement after its difficult previous season. For the new teams, simply establishing reliable running was a challenge: Simtek struggled to generate tyre temperature, while Pacific encountered problems around Paul Belmondo‘s front suspension mountings.

McLaren‘s throttle problems disrupted its preparation, while Damon Hill struggled with lost running. The opening session left the home favourite ahead, but without a comfortable margin over his principal challenger.

Sunday warm-up
Ayrton Senna led the warm-up ahead of Karl Wendlinger, but reliability was already troubling several teams. Ferrari discovered further engine and hydraulic problems and had to rearrange its cars before the start. Footwork‘s transmissions also raised concerns. With refuelling returning, a dependable car and a clean fuel stop would be essential partners to outright speed.

What happened in the 1994 Brazilian Grand Prix?
Jean Alesi briefly moved ahead of Michael Schumacher at the start, but the Benetton soon recovered second and closed on Ayrton Senna. Both leaders pitted on lap 21. Benetton completed its work more quickly, sending Michael Schumacher out in front and giving him control of the race.
A major accident eliminated Jos Verstappen, Eddie Irvine, Martin Brundle and Eric Bernard. Jos Verstappen was forced onto the grass as the cars converged and his Benetton was launched over Martin Brundle‘s McLaren. All escaped serious injury. Eddie Irvine received a one-race suspension, increased to three when Jordan‘s appeal was rejected.
Ayrton Senna continued chasing after the second stops but spun out on lap 56. Michael Schumacher went on to win by a lap from Damon Hill, with Jean Alesi third. Rubens Barrichello, Ukyo Katayama and Karl Wendlinger completed the points, Ukyo Katayama scoring for the first time. The season’s opening result gave Benetton an immediate advantage over the defending champions.
After the race, Michael Schumacher headed the drivers’ standings with 10 points, followed by Damon Hill on 6. Benetton led the constructors’ table on 10, with Williams on 6.
