Championship background

Damon Hill arrived at round 3 leading the 1996 F1 World Championship on 20 points, with Jacques Villeneuve on 6. Williams headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 26 points.

Race entries

The field was unchanged from Brazil, with Tarso Marques continuing alongside Pedro Lamy at Minardi. Arrows arrived under its new ownership, retaining Jos Verstappen and Ricardo Rosset. Jordan introduced additional downforce for the slow circuit, where the bumpy surface would prove as important as outright engine power.

Free Practice

Michael Schumacher set the morning pace on a slippery circuit, while Jos Verstappen put the Arrows fourth. The bumps and poor grip made it difficult to find a comfortable balance, and several drivers strayed off the racing surface as they explored the limits. Jordan tried a mid-mounted wing to add downforce.

Damon Hill edged ahead of Michael Schumacher in the afternoon, but Jos Verstappen stopped early and could not improve his morning time. Jacques Villeneuve remained outside the top ten as he learned another unfamiliar circuit. Johnny Herbert visited the gravel late in the session, and the drivers’ complaints about the bumps prompted overnight repair work.

Saturday’s running still demanded caution despite efforts to improve the surface. Jacques Villeneuve lost valuable preparation after going off during the morning, leaving him less certain about his settings. The lower grip also unsettled Tyrrell: Mika Salo‘s promising Friday form proved difficult to reproduce, and a small excursion further interrupted his progress.

Michael Schumacher ended the morning quickest, suggesting Ferrari could challenge Williams over a single lap. Maintaining that pace was another matter, with the F310 nervous over the bumps and under braking. Damon Hill faced a close qualifying contest on a circuit where securing clear track would be crucial.

Qualifying

Damon Hill secured pole with a 1:30.346 after Michael Schumacher had briefly looked set to give Ferrari its first pole of the season. Jacques Villeneuve took third, followed by Jean Alesi, Gerhard Berger and Rubens Barrichello. All 22 drivers qualified inside the 107% threshold.

Jos Verstappen impressed in seventh for Arrows. Jean Alesi had to switch to the spare Benetton after an early excursion, while a series of spins underlined the circuit’s unforgiving grip. Damon Hill‘s final successful run came only after he found the clear lap he needed.

Sunday warm-up

Sunday brought sunshine and calmer wind, allowing the drivers a more settled final session. Michael Schumacher led the warm-up while Damon Hill concentrated on checking his race settings. Most teams prepared for two fuel stops, with the tight layout making track position and clean pit work especially valuable.

What happened in the 1996 Argentine Grand Prix?

Damon Hill held the lead at the start, while Jacques Villeneuve slipped back and had to recover through the field. Michael Schumacher initially kept the leader in sight, but his Ferrari later retired. Jean Alesi‘s challenge was also compromised by time lost during a pit stop.

The safety car appeared after contact between Pedro Diniz and Luca Badoer left the Forti upside down in the gravel. Luca Badoer escaped from the car. Pedro Diniz continued, but after refuelling his Ligier caught fire, extending the interruption. He too escaped, with the incident later traced to a fuel-system valve problem.

Damon Hill rebuilt his advantage after the restart and won ahead of Jacques Villeneuve and Jean Alesi. Rubens Barrichello finished fourth, Eddie Irvine fifth and Jos Verstappen sixth, earning what would be Arrows‘s only point of the season. Three races into the campaign, Damon Hill had collected the maximum 30 points.

After the race, Damon Hill headed the drivers’ standings with 30 points, followed by Jacques Villeneuve on 12. Williams led the constructors’ table on 42, with Benetton on 13.
