Championship background

Damon Hill arrived at round 15 leading the 1996 F1 World Championship on 81 points, with Jacques Villeneuve on 68. Williams headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 149 points.

Race entries

The twenty-driver field was unchanged. Damon Hill arrived with another opportunity to secure the championship, while Jacques Villeneuve needed a strong result to keep the contest open. Pedro Lamy raced at home for Minardi, and Johnny Herbert confirmed a new two-year agreement with Sauber during the weekend.

Free Practice

Strong winds and a partly wet track complicated Friday morning. Eddie Irvine set the pace, while Michael Schumacher repeatedly returned to the pits with technical problems and could not complete a representative quick lap. Giovanni Lavaggi went off on his first lap, and Jos Verstappen did not run.

Michael Schumacher recovered in the dry afternoon to lead the day, helped by having preserved tyres during his restricted morning. Ukyo Katayama‘s third place was an encouraging surprise for Tyrrell. Jos Verstappen and Johnny Herbert spun as the wind continued to make the car’s behaviour difficult to judge.

Overnight rain left Saturday’s first session wet at the start, but the surface progressively dried. Rubens Barrichello finished that session fastest, with Mika Salo close behind. Giovanni Lavaggi‘s Minardi stopped early, costing him another opportunity to gain experience before qualifying.

Damon Hill set a strong early time in the final practice session, only for Michael Schumacher to beat it by nine thousandths on fresh tyres at the end. Jos Verstappen suffered an engine failure and Damon Hill spun in the closing moments. The leading cars were closely matched, setting up an unusually fine qualifying margin.

Qualifying

Damon Hill took pole with a 1:20.330, beating Jacques Villeneuve by just 0.009 seconds. Jean Alesi qualified third, followed by Michael Schumacher, Gerhard Berger and Eddie Irvine. Rain arrived only near the end, after the principal contest had been settled.

Pedro Lamy had to run back to the pits with his seat after his Minardi stopped, then continue in the spare. Both Minardis qualified, giving the home supporters a chance to see their driver race. At the front, the tiny gap between the Williams pair promised another close contest.

Sunday warm-up

Michael Schumacher led a comparatively calm warm-up after further setup work overnight. The sun was out, although a strong breeze remained. Williams planned three stops, with Benetton and McLaren aiming for two, leaving the teams with different routes to track position in the race.

What happened in the 1996 Portuguese Grand Prix?

Damon Hill led the opening stages, while Jacques Villeneuve found himself behind Jean Alesi and Michael Schumacher. The Canadian produced the race’s standout move around the outside of Michael Schumacher at the final corner as they approached the slower Minardi of Giovanni Lavaggi.

Jacques Villeneuve then used his pace and the final pit-stop sequence to move ahead of Damon Hill. Once in front he pulled clear, while Damon Hill concentrated on bringing home second after concerns about his clutch. Michael Schumacher finished third, just ahead of Jean Alesi.

Eddie Irvine and Gerhard Berger survived late contact to complete the points. The McLarens had earlier collided at the hairpin, damaging both cars’ prospects. Jacques Villeneuve‘s fourth win left him nine points behind Damon Hill: he had to win in Japan and hope Damon Hill failed to score.

After the race, Damon Hill headed the drivers’ standings with 87 points, followed by Jacques Villeneuve on 78. Williams led the constructors’ table on 165, with Benetton on 65.
