Championship background
Nigel Mansell arrived at round 11 leading the 1992 F1 World Championship on 86 points, with Riccardo Patrese on 40. Williams headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 126 points.
Race entries
Van de Eric van de Poele moved from Brabham to Fondmetal in place of Andrea Chiesa. Brabham entered only Damon Hill, reducing the field to 31 cars. Alessandro Zanardi remained at Minardi, while Paul Belmondo made his final appearance for March before Emanuele Naspetti took over.
Pre-qualifying
With one fewer entry, Bertrand Gachot no longer needed to pre-qualify. Gabriele Tarquini, van de Eric van de Poele, Ukyo Katayama and Roberto Moreno advanced, while McCarthy was released too late to begin a timed lap. This proved to be Formula 1’s final pre-qualifying session, as Brabham withdrew before the next race.

Friday Free Practice
Riccardo Patrese led Friday practice as Williams prepared to use the newer Renault engine in the race for the first time. Ligier also benefited from an updated Renault specification. McLaren introduced further changes, including traction control, which was especially relevant to the repeated low-speed acceleration zones. Ayrton Senna was encouraged by the system, even though Williams remained the benchmark.

Friday Qualifying
Riccardo Patrese claimed provisional pole on Friday, beating Nigel Mansell by 0.167 seconds. Ayrton Senna was third. For once, Nigel Mansell had to chase his team-mate’s benchmark rather than defend his own advantage.

Saturday Free Practice
Riccardo Patrese maintained his advantage on Saturday morning. The dusty surface made mistakes costly, and finding a clear lap was difficult on the short, twisting circuit. Benetton struggled with oversteer, while Lotus again had work to do on its balance. The weekend was also Gabriele Tarquini and van de Eric van de Poele‘s first opportunity to compare their pace as Fondmetal team-mates.

Saturday Qualifying
Riccardo Patrese was quickest again on Saturday, although his Friday time remained the decisive lap. Nigel Mansell retained second after a spin, followed by Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher, Gerhard Berger and Martin Brundle. Damon Hill qualified 25th for what became Brabham‘s final race. Alessandro Zanardi, Lehto, Roberto Moreno and McCarthy did not make the grid.

Sunday warm-up
Ayrton Senna and Gerhard Berger put McLaren first and second in the warm-up, separated by just 0.068 seconds. It was useful encouragement before a race where getting ahead at the start could be decisive. Nigel Mansell still had a championship to secure, and a strong Sunday result mattered more than winning another session. The leading cars’ traction systems would be under immediate scrutiny when the lights changed.

What happened in the 1992 Hungarian Grand Prix?
Riccardo Patrese led at the start, while Nigel Mansell fell behind both McLarens. Several early collisions thinned the field. Riccardo Patrese later spun out of the lead, handing Ayrton Senna control, and Nigel Mansell‘s own progress was interrupted by a tyre problem that forced an additional stop.
Nigel Mansell responded with a charging recovery through the field. Riccardo Patrese‘s engine failed, while Michael Schumacher retired after losing his rear wing. The Williams driver passed the cars between him and second place, including Gerhard Berger, to put the title beyond reach.
Ayrton Senna won from Nigel Mansell and Gerhard Berger. Häkkinen finished fourth, Martin Brundle fifth and Ivan Capelli sixth. Nigel Mansell‘s second place was enough to make him World Champion, ending years of near misses with a title secured well before the season’s conclusion.
After the race, Nigel Mansell headed the drivers’ standings with 92 points, followed by Riccardo Patrese on 40. Williams led the constructors’ table on 132, with McLaren on 58.
