Rain could not halt Nigel Mansell‘s winning start to the season at the 1992 Spanish Grand Prix. The Williams driver mastered a slippery Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya to win for the fourth time in succession, ahead of Michael Schumacher and a recovering Jean Alesi.

Championship background
Nigel Mansell arrived at round 4 leading the 1992 F1 World Championship on 30 points, with Riccardo Patrese on 18. Williams headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 48 points.
Race entries
Damon Hill replaced Giovanna Amati at Brabham for his first Formula 1 weekend. Benetton introduced the B192, while Gianni Morbidelli received Minardi‘s new M192. Perry McCarthy had obtained the licence needed to attempt pre-qualifying for Andrea Moda.
Pre-qualifying
Bertrand Gachot, Michele Alboreto, Ukyo Katayama and Andrea Chiesa secured the four places in the main sessions. Andrea Moda‘s morning ended almost as soon as it began: Roberto Moreno suffered engine trouble, and McCarthy’s car stopped only metres after leaving the pits. Neither advanced.

Friday Free Practice
Friday’s dry running offered the first race-weekend comparison between the new Benetton and Williams. Nigel Mansell led practice, but neither Williams driver was entirely satisfied with his car’s set-up. McLaren had revised the electronics and engine mapping after Brazil, while Williams was evaluating Renault‘s newer engine alongside the existing version. There was more development work in progress than the headline times alone suggested.

Friday Qualifying
Nigel Mansell secured Friday’s fastest time, with Michael Schumacher taking second in the new Benetton. Ayrton Senna was third, followed by Riccardo Patrese, Ivan Capelli and Martin Brundle. The dry session proved decisive for the grid as rain arrived for Saturday.

Saturday Free Practice
Heavy rain transformed Saturday morning, preventing a clean comparison with the previous day’s dry pace. Jean Alesi was fastest, comfortably ahead of the Williams pair, as the drivers explored the limited grip. With qualifying later also destined to be wet, the session’s value lay in preparing for difficult conditions rather than establishing a reliable guide to the dry-weather order.

Saturday Qualifying
Jean Alesi was fastest in Saturday’s wet qualifying, but nobody threatened the leading Friday times. Nigel Mansell therefore kept pole and Michael Schumacher earned his first front-row start. Stefano Modena, Ukyo Katayama and both Brabhams failed to qualify, so Damon Hill‘s first weekend ended before the race.

Sunday warm-up
Gerhard Berger topped a damp Sunday warm-up, with the unsettled weather keeping tyre and set-up decisions open. Another shower before the start would leave the track wet again. Williams chose its established engine specification for the race, while the possibility of changing conditions encouraged some teams to compromise between fully wet settings and a car that could cope if the surface began to dry.

What happened in the 1992 Spanish Grand Prix?
Nigel Mansell led at the start, with Riccardo Patrese moving into second and Jean Alesi climbing to third. Michael Schumacher soon passed the Ferrari, while Jean Alesi later lost ground after contact with Gerhard Berger. Riccardo Patrese‘s spin out of second place removed Nigel Mansell‘s closest early challenger.
Michael Schumacher stayed in contention as the rain intensified, but Nigel Mansell answered the threat and kept control. Jean Alesi recovered strongly after his earlier delay, working back towards the podium. Ayrton Senna and Ivan Capelli both crashed out late in the race, changing the points positions behind the leading pair.
Nigel Mansell won from Michael Schumacher and Jean Alesi, equalling Jim Clark‘s total of 25 Grand Prix victories. Gerhard Berger finished fourth, with Michele Alboreto fifth and Pierluigi Martini taking the final point. Four rounds into the championship, Nigel Mansell still had a perfect score.
After the race, Nigel Mansell headed the drivers’ standings with 40 points, followed by Riccardo Patrese on 18. Williams led the constructors’ table on 58, with Benetton on 17.
