Championship background
Nigel Mansell arrived at round 13 leading the 1992 F1 World Championship on 98 points, with Riccardo Patrese on 44. Williams headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 142 points.
Honda confirmed it would leave Formula 1 at the end of the season. Nigel Mansell‘s own future was also in doubt, and on race morning he announced his retirement from the sport. The newly crowned champion nevertheless remained determined to produce another strong result.
Race entries
Andrea Moda was excluded from the championship and refused entry at Monza, leaving 28 cars. Erik Comas returned after his Spa accident, while the other teams retained their drivers. Fondmetal continued despite serious financial difficulties.
Friday Free Practice
Nigel Mansell led Friday practice, although he complained about the power delivery of his experimental Renault engine specification. McLaren was evaluating active suspension, comparing it with the conventional system as the weekend developed. At Ferrari, Ivan Capelli was adapting to the transverse gearbox, while the high-speed circuit gave Jean Alesi a chance to exploit the stronger engine available to him.

Friday Qualifying
Nigel Mansell led Friday qualifying, but Ayrton Senna and Jean Alesi were within four tenths of his time. Ferrari‘s third place was particularly welcome at home after a difficult season.

Saturday Free Practice
Nigel Mansell and Riccardo Patrese remained close at the front on Saturday morning. The McLaren comparison continued, with Ayrton Senna favouring conventional suspension and Gerhard Berger persevering with the active car. Jordan‘s preparations were interrupted by an engine failure for Mauricio Gugelmin, adding to the team’s power deficit. At Lotus, Johnny Herbert‘s recurring damper trouble made it difficult to build on the car’s recent promise.

Sunday warm-up
Nigel Mansell headed the warm-up by almost two seconds, despite the uncertainty surrounding his future. Jean Alesi was second-fastest, giving Ferrari‘s supporters some encouragement before the start. The team planned a more conservative engine choice for the race, while Michael Schumacher preferred the balance of Benetton‘s spare. Converting speed into reliability would prove the afternoon’s decisive challenge.

What happened in the 1992 Italian Grand Prix?
Nigel Mansell led away, while Gerhard Berger started from the pits after trouble on the grid and Michael Schumacher needed a new nose following first-lap contact. Riccardo Patrese passed Jean Alesi and then Ayrton Senna to reach second. Both Ferraris retired early, ending the home team’s challenge.
Nigel Mansell allowed Riccardo Patrese through to lead, but Williams‘ hopes of a one-two collapsed. Nigel Mansell retired with hydraulic trouble, and a similar problem later slowed Riccardo Patrese dramatically. Ayrton Senna took over at the front as the Williams struggled towards the finish.
Ayrton Senna won ahead of Martin Brundle and Michael Schumacher, whose recovery brought Benetton both remaining podium places. Gerhard Berger finished fourth, Riccardo Patrese salvaged fifth and de Andrea de Cesaris took sixth. It was Ayrton Senna‘s final victory in a Honda-powered Formula 1 car.
After the race, Nigel Mansell headed the drivers’ standings with 98 points, followed by Michael Schumacher on 47. Williams led the constructors’ table on 144, with Benetton on 74.
