Championship background

Mika Häkkinen arrived at round 4 leading the 1998 F1 World Championship on 26 points, with Michael Schumacher on 14. McLaren headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 39 points.

Race entries

The same field arrived for the first European round. Ferrari introduced tall side-mounted wings, following a design already used by other teams, while Jordan brought a longer-wheelbase version of its car. Häkkinen was preparing for his hundredth Grand Prix start.

Free Practice

Eddie Irvine tried Ferrari‘s new side-mounted wings in opening practice but spun into the gravel and stalled. Michael Schumacher had an excursion at the same corner and was able to continue. McLaren led the session, while Ricardo Rosset stopped with an electrical problem and Ralf Schumacher lost running to a hydraulic leak.

Michael Schumacher closed the gap in the afternoon on fresh tyres, although the McLarens remained ahead. Häkkinen crossed the gravel and sustained minor sidepod damage, while David Coulthard stopped early with a suspected engine problem. An oil leak interrupted Heinz-Harald Frentzen‘s running, and Damon Hill reported a more consistent balance from Jordan‘s revised wheelbase.

Sunny conditions greeted Saturday’s opening practice as the teams continued their setup work. Williams struggled to find sufficient grip without compromising straight-line speed. Gearbox problems during the morning disrupted Olivier Panis and Pedro Diniz, leaving both teams with repairs to complete before qualifying.

David Coulthard improved sharply in the final session to finish well ahead of Häkkinen. Damon Hill took an early trip through the gravel at Acque Minerali but continued, while Jacques Villeneuve and Toranosuke Takagi also went off. Ferrari remained behind the McLarens, making further improvements essential before the afternoon’s qualifying contest.

Qualifying

David Coulthard took pole with a 1:25.973, narrowly ahead of Häkkinen. Higher temperatures made the McLaren less comfortable than it had been in practice, but David Coulthard still completed the quickest lap. Michael Schumacher and Eddie Irvine filled the second row for Ferrari.

Alexander Wurz qualified fifth ahead of Jacques Villeneuve. Damon Hill‘s final attempt ended with an engine failure, leaving him seventh. Ferrari‘s side-mounted wings had not overturned McLaren‘s advantage, and the devices used by several teams would be banned after the weekend on safety grounds.

What happened in the 1998 San Marino Grand Prix?

David Coulthard led Häkkinen away, with Michael Schumacher behind them. The two McLarens initially controlled the race, but Häkkinen retired with a gearbox failure. David Coulthard continued in front, while Schumacher became his main challenger.

Debris lodged in the McLaren‘s sidepod caused its oil temperature to rise, forcing David Coulthard to manage his pace. Schumacher closed quickly after his second stop, but David Coulthard had enough in hand to protect the lead and secure his first win of the season.

Schumacher finished second and Eddie Irvine third, giving Ferrari another double podium. Jacques Villeneuve and Heinz-Harald Frentzen took fourth and fifth, with Jean Alesi collecting the final point. David Coulthard‘s victory brought him to within three points of Häkkinen in the drivers’ championship.

After the race, Mika Häkkinen headed the drivers’ standings with 26 points, followed by David Coulthard on 23. McLaren led the constructors’ table on 49, with Ferrari on 31.
