Championship background

Mika Häkkinen arrived at round 7 leading the 1998 F1 World Championship on 46 points, with David Coulthard on 29. McLaren headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 75 points.

Race entries

The same twenty-two drivers travelled to Montreal. Williams introduced a revised car for Jacques Villeneuve‘s home race, while Ferrari brought a new front wing and continued its work with Goodyear to close the gap to McLaren.

Free Practice

The opening session took place in cool, windy conditions. Häkkinen narrowly led David Coulthard, with the first six drivers covered by less than a second. Ricardo Rosset‘s Tyrrell developed engine trouble on its first lap, costing him the entire session and leaving him with work to catch up on in the afternoon.

Jacques Villeneuve‘s home preparations suffered a setback when a hydraulic problem stopped his Williams and briefly halted the session. Häkkinen remained fastest, but Schumacher moved into second. The Ferrari driver welcomed the improved Goodyear tyres, although the wind made finding a consistent setup difficult and fuel loads still complicated comparisons.

Jan Magnussen suffered a heavy crash midway through Saturday’s first session. He escaped injury, but the damaged Stewart brought a temporary halt to running and left the mechanics facing substantial repairs. Häkkinen again led David Coulthard, continuing McLaren‘s strong practice form despite Ferrari‘s improving challenge.

The McLarens finished Saturday’s running with identical best times, underlining how little separated their drivers before qualifying. Elsewhere, the morning had brought an engine failure for Alexander Wurz and an excursion for Eddie Irvine. Benetton and Ferrari therefore had both repair work and setup problems to address before the grid was decided.

Qualifying

David Coulthard claimed pole with a late 1:18.213, edging Häkkinen by just 0.069 seconds. Schumacher was third, less than three tenths from pole, and Giancarlo Fisichella completed the second row. The Ferrari‘s improved competitiveness promised a closer contest than McLaren had faced in Monaco.

Ralf Schumacher took fifth ahead of Jacques Villeneuve and Heinz-Harald Frentzen. Williams‘ revised car had not delivered the leap forward the team hoped for, while Rubens Barrichello stopped with an engine problem and qualified thirteenth. Ricardo Rosset successfully qualified this time, putting all twenty-two cars on the grid.

Sunday warm-up

Warm-up began on a damp track, prompting changes between dry-weather tyres and intermediates. The surface improved as the session progressed, and Heinz-Harald Frentzen eventually finished fastest ahead of Jacques Villeneuve. Ralf Schumacher spun during the running, while the changing conditions made outright times a poor guide to race pace.

What happened in the 1998 Canadian Grand Prix?

A first-corner accident sent Alexander Wurz rolling and brought out the red flags. He escaped unhurt and joined the restart in a spare car. More trouble followed at the second start: Häkkinen’s gearbox failed and another collision eliminated Jean Alesi and Jarno Trulli.

David Coulthard led until a throttle problem ended his race. Schumacher then faced a ten-second stop-go penalty after his exit from the pits forced Heinz-Harald Frentzen off. Giancarlo Fisichella led, but Schumacher recovered the lost ground and built enough of an advantage to keep first place through his final stop.

Giancarlo Fisichella finished second and Eddie Irvine recovered from an early puncture to take third. Alexander Wurz was fourth after his frightening accident, followed by Rubens Barrichello and Jan Magnussen. Sixth brought Jan Magnussen his only Formula 1 point in what proved to be his final Grand Prix.

After the race, Mika Häkkinen headed the drivers’ standings with 46 points, followed by Michael Schumacher on 34. McLaren led the constructors’ table on 75, with Ferrari on 53.
