Founded in 1972 by the visionary Italian engineer Giampaolo Dallara, Dallara has grown from a small workshop in Varano de’ Melegari into a global powerhouse of motorsport engineering. Before striking out on his own, Dallara honed his craft with legendary marques including Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini, and De Tomaso—a pedigree that would shape the DNA of his own company.

Today, Dallara stands as Italy’s largest multinational race car manufacturer, and arguably one of the most influential behind-the-scenes players in global motorsport. It is the sole chassis supplier for elite series such as the IndyCar Series, Indy NXT, FIA Formula 2 Championship, FIA Formula 3 Championship, and Super Formula Championship. Beyond single-seaters, the company also contributes to endurance racing, including icons like the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the 24 Hours of Daytona. Its expertise has even extended into cutting-edge categories like Formula E and modern Formula One collaborations.

Formula One

Dallara’s Formula One journey began in 1988, when it partnered with BMS Scuderia Italia to design and build its chassis. What followed was a five-year stint that showcased both ambition and flashes of genuine competitiveness.

Their standout creation, the Dallara F191, competed in the 1991 season powered by a Judd V10 engine. It delivered a headline result with a third-place finish at the 1991 San Marino Grand Prix, driven by JJ Lehto. This wasn’t a one-off success either—Dallara also secured another podium at the 1989 Canadian Grand Prix with Andrea de Cesaris.

Across their initial F1 campaign with Scuderia Italia (19881992), the team’s Constructors’ Championship results reflected both progress and inconsistency:

Return Attempts and Modern Involvement

Dallara briefly re-entered the Formula One orbit in 1999, building a test chassis for Honda as part of a planned return that ultimately failed to materialise.

In the mid-2000s, the company again looked poised for a comeback. The arrival of experienced designer Gary Anderson in 2004 fuelled speculation, and a deal was struck with the emerging Midland F1 Racing to design a 2006 car. However, when Midland acquired the existing Jordan Grand Prix operation to fast-track its entry, priorities shifted. The partnership quietly dissolved, and the planned Dallara chassis never made it to the grid.

A more tangible return came in 2010, when Dallara built the F110 chassis for Hispania Racing Team. The project, however, was troubled from the outset. Financial issues within the team delayed payments and hindered development, while the car itself faced criticism for lacking modern engineering standards. The F110 ran the entire season with virtually no upgrades—remarkably using a single aerodynamic configuration at every circuit, from Monaco to Monza. The partnership officially ended in May 2010, with engineer Geoff Willis openly critical of the car’s design approach.

The Haas Era

Dallara’s most successful and sustained modern Formula One involvement began with Haas F1 Team. In 2014, team founder Gene Haas confirmed a partnership with Dallara to develop the team’s first car.

That collaboration bore fruit with the unveiling of the Haas VF-16 in February 2016. Since then, Dallara has remained a key technical partner, responsible for designing Haas chassis through to at least the 2025 season—cementing its role as one of Formula One’s most important, if often understated, engineering forces.
