1972 F1 World Championship

Season Summary

The 1972 FIA Formula One World Championship began on 23 January and concluded on 8 October, over 12 race weekends, alongside a number of non-championship Formula One races that were still common during this era.

Season

The World Drivers’ Championship was won by Emerson Fittipaldi, driving for Lotus. At just 25 years old, Fittipaldi became the youngest World Champion in Formula One history at the time. This record would stand for more than three decades until Fernando Alonso won the championship in 2005. The defending champion Jackie Stewart finished second in the standings, unable to prevent Fittipaldi from securing his first title.

Fittipaldi’s success came as something of a surprise given Lotus’ struggles in the previous season, when the team had finished only fifth in the championship standings in 1971. However, Lotus continued to refine its innovative Lotus 72, a car featuring a distinctive “wedge-shaped” design that had already begun to revolutionise Formula One aerodynamics. The car also became famous for its striking black-and-gold livery, introduced to promote Imperial Tobacco’s John Player Special brand, one of the most iconic sponsorship schemes in F1 history.

The season also featured a memorable victory for Jean-Pierre Beltoise, who won the 1972 Monaco Grand Prix in extremely wet conditions, driving a BRM P160. The race was notable not only for Beltoise’s performance but also because it marked the final Formula One victory for the British Racing Motors (BRM) team, bringing an end to the team’s winning history in the championship.

Another significant moment came at the end of the season when John Surtees announced his retirement from Formula One. Surtees had achieved the rare distinction of becoming World Champion in both motorcycle racing and Formula One, having won the 1964 Formula One World Championship after already securing six world titles in the 350cc and 500cc motorcycle categories. His departure marked the end of one of the most remarkable careers in motorsport history.
