The 1988 FIA Formula One World Championship began on 3 April and concluded on 13 November, over 16 race weekends.
Season
The year was defined by the extraordinary dominance of McLaren-Honda, whose drivers Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost controlled the championship from start to finish. Senna ultimately secured the World Drivers’ Championship, the first of his career, while McLaren comfortably claimed the Constructors’ Championship.
Between them, Senna and Prost achieved an astonishing fifteen victories from the sixteen races held during the season. The only race that escaped their control was the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, where Gerhard Berger delivered a memorable and emotional victory for Ferrari. The win carried particular significance as it came just four weeks after the death of Ferrari founder Enzo Ferrari, making the triumph deeply symbolic for the Italian team and its supporters.
McLaren’s dominance during the 1988 season produced several records. The team’s total of fifteen victories stood as one of the most remarkable achievements in Formula One history and has only been matched or surpassed in seasons featuring more than sixteen races. Their performance in the Constructors’ Championship was equally overwhelming. McLaren accumulated 199 points, more than three times the total of any other team, setting a record that remained unbeaten until 2002.
In contrast, the defending Constructors’ Champions, Williams, experienced a dramatic fall in competitiveness. After losing their previous supply of Honda turbo V6 engines, the team was forced to compete with naturally aspirated Judd V8 engines, which were significantly less powerful than those used by their rivals. As a result, Williams struggled throughout the season, failing to win a race and managing only two podium finishes across the entire championship. Their decline ensured that they were never a serious contender in the championship battle during the 1988 campaign.
