Alex Albon has committed his future to Williams by signing a one-year contract extension that will keep him with the Formula 1 team through the end of the 2027 season.
The British-born Thai driver’s existing agreement was due to expire at the end of the 2026 season, but the new deal ensures he will remain with Williams for another year as Formula 1 prepares to return from its summer break at this weekend’s Dutch Grand Prix.
The extension comes during a challenging campaign for both Alex Albon and Williams. The 30-year-old has collected only five points across the opening 11 rounds of the season, with the team struggling to meet expectations following the introduction of Formula 1’s new regulations at the beginning of 2026.
Despite those difficulties, Albon remains convinced by the project at Williams and the progress the team has made since he arrived four years ago.
Albon said: “Since joining Atlassian Williams F1 Team in 2022, the transformation this team has made is difficult to put into words.
“One tough year doesn’t tell the full picture, and it only gives me more motivation to keep building and pushing together with the factory and our fans to achieve great things.
“Our story is not over yet, so my full focus now is on doing whatever it takes to get us back up the grid.”
The 2027 season will be Albon’s sixth campaign as a Williams driver and his eighth season competing in Formula 1.
He also reached an important milestone at the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix, the final race before the summer break, when he became the first driver to make 100 race appearances for Williams. Earlier in the campaign, Albon had moved beyond Nigel Mansell’s previous mark of 95 races for the team.
His decision to extend his stay represents another show of commitment to a Williams rebuilding project that has experienced significant highs and lows during his time with the squad.
Team principal James Vowles welcomed the agreement and described Albon as an important figure in Williams’ efforts to return towards the front of the Formula 1 grid.
Vowles said: “I am delighted that Alex and Atlassian Williams F1 Team are continuing our extraordinary journey together.
“Alex has been a leader of this transformation project since day one and we have plenty of unfinished business that we are determined to achieve.
“Alex is one of the best drivers on the grid and knows better than anyone the enormous improvements we have made in recent years – re-signing him shows the belief we both have in the direction we are heading.”
While Albon’s immediate future has now been settled, uncertainty remains over who will partner him at Williams beyond the current season.
Carlos Sainz‘s contract is also due to expire at the end of 2026, and the Spaniard has previously raised doubts over whether he wants to remain with Williams as the team continues to struggle for competitiveness.
Albon’s decision to sign only a one-year extension could also be significant. The relatively short agreement potentially gives both driver and team flexibility beyond 2027 while allowing Albon to continue with a project he has played a central role in developing.
It also comes at a time when there appear to be few realistic alternative seats available to him elsewhere on the Formula 1 grid.
Albon’s relationship with Williams has helped revive a Formula 1 career that appeared uncertain after his spell with Red Bull came to an end.
He made his Formula 1 debut with Toro Rosso in 2019 and impressed sufficiently to earn a mid-season promotion to Red Bull, where he became Max Verstappen‘s team-mate.
However, Albon found it difficult to consistently match Verstappen and lost his race seat at the end of the 2020 season. He subsequently spent the entire 2021 campaign without a Formula 1 drive before being handed an opportunity to return to the grid with Williams in 2022.
Since then, he has established himself as one of the team’s central figures and has played a major role in Williams’ attempts to rebuild its competitiveness.
His strongest campaign for the team came in 2025, when Albon finished eighth in the drivers’ world championship. Williams also secured fifth place in the constructors’ standings, providing encouragement that the team could make another step forward when Formula 1 introduced its major new technical regulations for 2026.
That expected progress has not materialised so far.
Williams enters the second part of the 2026 season third from bottom in the constructors’ championship with only 11 points, despite using the Mercedes power unit that has helped the Silver Arrows establish a commanding advantage at the top of the standings.
Albon has contributed five of those points during the opening 11 rounds, underlining the difficulties Williams has experienced adapting to the new regulatory era.
The disappointing campaign has therefore raised questions over the team’s short-term direction, particularly with Sainz yet to commit his future beyond the end of the season.
Albon, however, has chosen to give Williams another year to demonstrate that its wider transformation can eventually translate into stronger results on track.
His extension provides the team with continuity as it attempts to recover from its difficult 2026 campaign and build towards a more competitive future.
For Albon, the agreement also offers another opportunity to continue the second chapter of his Formula 1 career at the team that brought him back to the championship after his year on the sidelines.
With his future now confirmed until the end of 2027, his attention returns to helping Williams climb back up the Formula 1 order when the season resumes following the summer break.
