1964 F1 World Championship

Season Summary

The 1964 FIA Formula One World Championship began on 10 May and concluded on 25 October, over 10 Grand Prix, alongside eight non-championship races open to Formula One cars.

Season

The World Drivers’ Championship was won by John Surtees, driving for Ferrari, who secured the first and only Formula One title of his career. Surtees’ achievement was particularly remarkable in motorsport history, as he had already been a multiple world champion in motorcycle racing before switching to Formula One. His success in 1964 made him the only driver to win world championships on both two- and four-wheels.

In the Constructors’ Championship, Ferrari also emerged victorious, claiming the International Cup for Formula One Manufacturers. This marked the team’s second Constructors’ title and would prove to be their last championship success until 1975, ending a long gap before Ferrari returned to the top of the sport in the mid-1970s.

The 1964 season also marked the end of a long and distinguished career for Maurice Trintignant, who retired from Formula One at the age of 46 after fifteen seasons in the sport. Notably, Trintignant had been part of the very first Formula One World Championship season in 1950, and his retirement meant that no drivers from that inaugural year remained active in the championship.

Tragically, the season was also marked by the death of Dutch driver Carel Godin de Beaufort, who suffered a serious accident during practice for the German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring. He was taken to hospital but succumbed to his injuries the following day, adding to the ongoing concerns about safety in Formula One during this era.
