1967 F1 World Championship

Season Summary

The 1967 FIA Formula One World Championship began on 2 January and concluded on 22 October, over 11 Grand Prix, alongside six non-championship races open to Formula One cars.

Season

The World Drivers’ Championship was won by Denny Hulme, driving for Brabham, who secured the only title of his Formula One career. Hulme’s success also carried lasting historical significance, as he remains, as of 2026, the only New Zealand driver to win the Formula One World Championship. In a further unusual statistic, Hulme became the first driver in championship history to win the title without securing a single pole position during the season, underlining the importance of consistency and race performance over outright qualifying speed.

In the Constructors’ Championship, Brabham also claimed the title, completing a highly successful year for the team. The combination of Hulme’s consistent results and the team’s strong performances ensured they finished ahead of their rivals in both championships.

Despite the competitive racing, the 1967 season was overshadowed by tragedy. During the Monaco Grand Prix, Ferrari driver Lorenzo Bandini suffered a devastating accident while attempting to recover from an early loss of the race lead. Bandini clipped the harbour-side chicane, causing his car to strike a hidden mooring point. The impact caused the car to overturn and burst into flames. Marshals took several minutes to reach and extract him from the wreckage, and although he was taken to hospital, Bandini succumbed to his injuries three days later.

Further tragedy occurred away from the championship races when British driver Bob Anderson was fatally injured during a testing accident at Silverstone. His car left the track in wet conditions and struck a marshal’s post, resulting in severe chest and neck injuries from which he later died in hospital.

The events of 1967 served as another stark reminder of the dangers inherent in Formula One during this era, even as the sport continued to evolve in terms of both competition and technology.
