Lando Norris delivered another statement under the Vegas floodlights, claiming pole position for the 2025 Las Vegas Grand Prix at the end of a wet and deeply unpredictable qualifying hour that kept every team guessing.

What To Know?
  • Norris on pole with 1:47.934 – his third consecutive P1.
  • Verstappen P2, Sainz P3; Russell topped Q1 & Q2.
  • Albon crashed late in Q1; Hamilton qualified P20.

In conditions that were treacherous from the opening laps to the final flag, the McLaren driver – and current leader of the 2025 F1 World Championship – produced a superb 1m 47.934s, securing his third consecutive pole and beating Max Verstappen by almost three-tenths. Williams enjoyed another standout Saturday as Carlos Sainz took third, while title rival Oscar Piastri salvaged fifth after a dramatic late attempt that included a runoff excursion and close combat with Isack Hadjar.

The rain never relented across the three segments, forcing drivers onto full wet tyres in Q1 and Q2 before switching to intermediates as the track stabilised in Q3. George Russell had looked ominously strong in the toughest of the conditions, topping both Q1 and Q2 for Mercedes, but as grip returned late on, others found greater rhythm. Norris remained measured, mistake-free, and consistently fastest when the track was at its cruelest, twice escaping moments at Turn 9 before finding his ultimate lap. Verstappen pushed for a last-minute improvement, but the Red Bull star fell short after losing time in Sector 2, while Sainz continued his excellent Vegas form with a clinical lap to secure P3, splitting the two Britons.

Piastri was left frustrated in fifth after attacking the final run heavily, running deep into the Turn 12 runoff as he jockeyed with Hadjar for track space. Behind him, Liam Lawson impressed again for Racing Bulls in sixth, followed by Fernando Alonso, Hadjar, Charles Leclerc – who also over-committed into Turn 12 – and Pierre Gasly rounding out the top 10. Big names fell early: Nico Hülkenberg missed Q3 by just one place, finishing 11th ahead of Lance Stroll, Esteban Ocon, Ollie Bearman, and Franco Colapinto. Q1 proved even more dramatic, with Alex Albon crashing at Turn 16 and breaking his front-right suspension, eliminating him alongside Kimi Antonelli, Gabriel Bortoleto, Yuki Tsunoda, and Lewis Hamilton – the seven-time World Champion shockingly ending the session 20th after failing to extract tyre temperature when it mattered most.

As the Strip dries and the lights prepare to blaze again on race night, Norris holds the upper hand. Verstappen lurks. Sainz and Russell look dangerous. And Piastri has work to do. Las Vegas has thrown up another chaotic qualifying – and the race story looks every bit as volatile.
