Born on 16 April 1986 in Uphall, Scotland, and raised in Bathgate, Paul di Resta is part of a proud Scottish racing tradition that includes names like Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart, and David Coulthard (his cousin, no less). But di Resta’s journey to the Formula One grid—and beyond—has been anything but predictable.

Before making his F1 debut, di Resta had already made waves in the junior ranks. He was Formula 3 Euro Series champion in 2006, beating none other than Sebastian Vettel to the title. Then he switched gears—literally—by moving to touring cars, where he clinched the DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters) championship in 2010 with Mercedes. Not too shabby for someone still in their mid-20s.

That performance earned him a spot in Formula One, and he debuted with Force India in 2011. Over three seasons, di Resta proved himself a dependable and intelligent racer. He scored points in his very first F1 race and regularly held his own in the ultra-competitive midfield. He came close to a podium finish a few times, but luck—and sometimes strategy—wasn’t always on his side.

By 2014, di Resta found himself without a full-time F1 seat. Rather than sit idle, he rejoined the DTM paddock with Mercedes, picking up where he left off and continuing to rack up strong results.

But Formula One hadn’t seen the last of him.

In 2016, di Resta became a reserve driver for Williams, and in a moment that felt straight out of a racing drama, he was called up at the last minute to race in the 2017 Hungarian Grand Prix after Felipe Massa fell ill. With no recent F1 mileage, minimal prep, and having spent most of his recent time in a TV commentary booth, di Resta suited up and jumped straight into qualifying. He performed admirably—proving once again that true racers never forget how to hustle.

He later took on a similar reserve role with McLaren in 2022, showing that his blend of experience, adaptability, and professionalism kept him in demand across the paddock.

Outside the cockpit, di Resta became a familiar face and voice as a commentator and pundit for Sky Sports F1, bringing insight and calm analysis to millions of fans tuning in around the world.

These days, he’s still very much a part of racing—competing in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) for Peugeot.
