Formula 1 arrived in Mexico City with history on the line as Kimi Antonelli closed in on becoming the sport’s youngest-ever world champion. The Mercedes sensation headed into Round 19 of the championship with a commanding lead in the drivers’ standings and the opportunity to seal his maiden title at just 20 years old. But Antonelli’s potential coronation was only part of the story. Mexican favourite Sergio Perez was set to celebrate his 300th Grand Prix start on home soil, adding another milestone to a weekend already packed with significance.

Few circuits on the Formula 1 calendar present quite the same technical challenge as the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. Sitting approximately 2,200 metres above sea level, the Mexico City venue is comfortably the highest-altitude track in F1, with the thinner air placing additional demands on power unit cooling and overall car performance. The reduced air density also means less aerodynamic downforce, forcing teams to run Monaco-style high-downforce configurations just to generate the grip needed through the corners.
That compromise is particularly important through the circuit’s fast and flowing middle sector, before drivers tackle the slower, more technical final section that winds through the famous Foro Sol stadium complex, a former baseball venue now transformed into one of F1’s most atmospheric settings. Ahead og the 2026 race and despite the high-downforce setups, overtaking opportunities remained plentiful thanks to the long run towards Turn 1 and the heavy braking zone at Turn 4. Both had produced plenty of wheel-to-wheel drama over the years, including the controversial clashes between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris in 2024.
Much like the previous round in Austin, hot and dry conditions were expected to add another layer to the challenge. With temperatures forecast to reach around 27°C for both qualifying and Sunday’s race, and no rain expected, tyre management and cooling could prove decisive as the teams battled for performance in Mexico City’s demanding high-altitude conditions.
Autódromo José Carlos Pace Stats & Facts
Since returning to the Formula 1 calendar in 2021 following its pandemic-enforced absence the previous year, the Mexico City Grand Prix had delivered some memorable performances and major milestones. Ahead of the 2026 race, Max Verstappen had been the standout driver at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, winning three consecutive races between 2021 and 2023 to extend his record at the circuit to five victories. His 2022 triumph was particularly significant, marking his 14th win of the campaign and breaking the record for most victories in a single F1 season at the time. At more than 2,200 metres above sea level, the venue also holds the distinction of being the highest circuit on the calendar, with its thin air creating a unique test of aerodynamic efficiency, power unit performance and cooling.

However, Verstappen’s dominance had given way to a more unpredictable period in Mexico City, with two different teams taking the top step of the podium across the last two editions. Carlos Sainz ended Red Bull’s winning streak with Ferrari in 2024, before Lando Norris delivered victory for McLaren in 2025. With three different winners across the past three seasons and Mercedes now emerging as the benchmark in 2026, the stage was set for another potential shift in the circuit’s recent history as Formula 1 returned to Mexico City.
Championship background
Kimi Antonelli arrived in Mexico City with his first Formula 1 world title firmly within reach following a dominant victory at the 2026 United States Grand Prix in Austin. The Mercedes driver needed only a top-nine finish to become the youngest world champion in F1 history, while the title would also be his if nearest rivals George Russell and Lewis Hamilton both fail to win. After a remarkable campaign, the Italian had his first opportunity to put the championship beyond reach with three rounds still remaining.
Mercedes could make it a double celebration by securing the Constructors’ Championship, although the Silver Arrows must outscore Ferrari by 39 points to seal the crown in Mexico. Ferrari and Red Bull had emerged as Mercedes’ closest challengers in recent races, while McLaren had struggled to maintain their earlier momentum despite Lando Norris taking victory at this event 12 months ago.
The Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez had also traditionally been a happy hunting ground for Max Verstappen, whose five victories at the circuit remained an outright record. The Red Bull driver would be looking to add another Mexico City triumph to his collection, but the spotlight would inevitably fall on Antonelli. The question was no longer simply whether the Mercedes youngster could become world champion, but whether he could crown his extraordinary season with another statement victory on one of F1’s biggest stages.
Race entries
Aston Martin replaced Lance Stroll in FP1 with reserve driver Jak Crawford. Audi reserve driver Freddie Slater, 18, made his Formula 1 Grand Prix weekend debut driving the R26 in FP1, a duty he would continue into the next round at the 2026 São Paulo Grand Prix.
Aside from these changes, the lineup of drivers and teams remained the same as the 2026 season’s entry list, featuring no reserve drivers for the race.
