The 2019 FIA Formula One World Championship began in March and concluded in December, with drivers and teams competing across 21 Grand Prix. The season also featured an important milestone in the sport’s history: the 2019 Chinese Grand Prix became the 1000th race in the Formula One World Championship.
Season
The championship ultimately belonged once again to Lewis Hamilton, who successfully defended his title and secured the sixth World Drivers’ Championship of his career at the United States Grand Prix. Hamilton’s triumph further cemented his place among the most successful drivers in the sport’s history. His team, Mercedes, also continued its dominant run in the hybrid era of Formula One. The team clinched the Constructors’ Championship for the sixth consecutive season at the Japanese Grand Prix, matching the record previously set by Ferrari between 1999 and 2004.
Alongside the battle for the championships, the 2019 season also introduced several new drivers who would go on to play significant roles in the sport’s future. Lando Norris made his Formula One debut with McLaren, George Russell joined Williams, and Alexander Albon entered the championship with Toro Rosso before later moving to Red Bull Racing during the season. All three drivers would go on to become prominent figures in Formula One, with Norris later becoming a world champion and Russell and Albon achieving race-winning success in subsequent years.
