Championship background

Graham Hill arrived at round 2 leading the 1964 F1 World Championship on 9 points, with Richie Ginther on 6. BRM headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 9 points.

Race entries

Eighteen drivers were invited, with BRP absent. Ferrari brought a second V8 car, and Siffert arrived with a new Brabham–BRM. The Centro Sud team returned with Maggs and Baghetti, while local favourite de Beaufort entered his Porsche. Brabham combined the meeting with a qualifying trip to Indianapolis.

Friday morning timed practice

Gurney received the fastest official time, narrowly ahead of Clark, although pit-side watches prompted disagreement over the order. Brabham completed his running before leaving for Indianapolis. Ferrari’s newer V8 was not ready, so Bandini used the V6. Siffert also missed the session while his new car was finished.

Friday afternoon timed practice

Clark improved and Hill joined the leading group, but Gurney’s morning time remained unbeaten. Surtees battled an oil leak, while Cooper struggled to improve its handling. Clark spent time showing Arundell the circuit before increasing his own pace. Hailwood’s gearbox failed, bringing his afternoon to an early end.

Saturday final qualifying

The front-row times stood, while most of the field improved. Ferrari continued switching cars as Surtees dealt with a leaking radiator and Bandini tried the new V8. Siffert finally ran his completed Brabham. Maggs overturned his BRM late in practice and could not start, reducing the field to seventeen.

Qualifying Classification

Three two-hour timed sessions determined the grid. Gurney’s official Friday morning time remained the pole-winning lap despite contemporary disagreement among unofficial timekeepers.

Pre-race preparations

Brabham returned from Indianapolis on Sunday morning. Ferrari finalised its car allocations and transferred the drivers’ individual nose sections and windscreens. A slow assembly for the warm-up lap delayed the start beyond the advertised time.

What happened in the 1964 Dutch Grand Prix?

Clark took the lead at the start and quickly established a pace the others could not sustain. Surtees emerged as his nearest rival, but the Ferrari never threatened the Lotus driver’s control.

Clark continued extending his advantage around the fast, flowing circuit. Arundell maintained a strong position behind Surtees, giving Lotus another productive result after his Monaco podium.

Clark won with only Surtees remaining on the lead lap. Arundell finished third ahead of Hill, Amon and Bob Anderson. The victory brought Clark level with Hill in the championship.

After the race, Graham Hill headed the drivers’ standings with 12 points, followed by Jim Clark on 12. Lotus – Climax led the constructors’ table on 13, with BRM on 12.
