Kimi Antonelli strengthened his grip on the 2026 championship by claiming the first Sprint victory of his Formula 1 career at Silverstone, overtaking Lewis Hamilton to win an entertaining 100km contest at the British Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver delivered a measured drive after shadowing Hamilton through the opening laps before making the decisive move, while Lando Norris completed the podium in front of his home crowd.

What To Know
  • Kimi Antonelli claimed his first Formula 1 Sprint victory after passing Lewis Hamilton on Lap 8.
  • Hamilton finished second, with Lando Norris completing the podium for McLaren.
  • Antonelli won by 2.745 seconds to strengthen his lead in the 2026 F1 World Championship.
  • Liam Lawson and Nico Hulkenberg were investigated after the race, while Sergio Perez received a 10-second penalty.

Hamilton made a strong launch from Sprint pole and immediately defended the inside line into the opening corners, forcing Antonelli to the outside to retain the lead. The Ferrari driver controlled the early phase of the race, but Antonelli never allowed the seven-time World Champion to escape, remaining firmly within striking distance as the pair pulled clear of the chasing pack.

After several laps of relentless pressure, the breakthrough finally arrived on Lap 8. Antonelli seized his opportunity to move ahead of Hamilton and immediately began building a gap, demonstrating the superior pace of the Mercedes once in clean air. From that point onwards, the Italian never looked under serious threat, steadily extending his advantage before taking the chequered flag 2.745 seconds clear to secure his maiden Sprint triumph.

Antonelli strikes back to claim maiden Sprint victory after passing Hamilton at Silverstone

Hamilton settled for second after leading the opening stages, while Norris delivered a composed performance to finish third for McLaren. The Briton spent much of the race defending from George Russell, who remained close throughout but ultimately had to settle for fourth after failing to find a way past his fellow countryman.

Charles Leclerc ensured both Ferraris finished inside the top five with a fifth-place finish, ahead of Max Verstappen in sixth. Oscar Piastri collected valuable points in seventh for McLaren, while Racing Bulls driver Liam Lawson crossed the line eighth to secure the final points-paying position.

Lawson’s afternoon may not be over, however, with the New Zealander set to face a post-race investigation for allegedly moving under braking during a late battle with Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar. Hadjar narrowly missed out on the points in ninth after an aggressive fight over the closing laps.

British rookie Arvid Lindblad enjoyed an encouraging first home Sprint as a Formula 1 driver by bringing his Racing Bulls home in 10th, finishing ahead of Alpine duo Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto.

Audi’s Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto followed in 13th and 14th, respectively, although Hulkenberg will also visit the stewards after being investigated for leaving the circuit and gaining an advantage during the race.

Haas experienced another difficult Sprint, with Ollie Bearman finishing 15th ahead of team-mate Esteban Ocon. Williams endured a frustrating afternoon on home soil as Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon classified 17th and 18th, respectively.

Further back, Cadillac’s Valtteri Bottas crossed the line ahead of Aston Martin pairing Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll. Sergio Perez completed the classification in 22nd after receiving a 10-second time penalty for causing a collision with Alonso during the race.

Antonelli’s victory not only delivered the first Sprint success of his Formula 1 career but also extended his championship momentum heading into Grand Prix qualifying later on Saturday. With Hamilton and Ferrari showing impressive pace throughout the weekend and Mercedes proving they have the speed to convert opportunities into victories, the battle at the front would continue as the British Grand Prix weekend resumed.
