Formula One History Recommends

Launching cleanly from P1, Norris held the inside line into Turn 1 and immediately established track position — a decisive factor around the Miami circuit. From there, he steadily built a gap over Piastri and Leclerc across the 19-lap contest, avoiding the chaos unfolding behind and executing a flawless Sprint to return McLaren to winning form at a crucial stage of the weekend.

Mercedes falter as Antonelli loses ground amid early race drama

While Norris escaped cleanly, Kimi Antonelli endured another difficult race start, dropping from second to fourth within the opening corners. The Mercedes driver was immediately drawn into a tense intra-team battle with George Russell, who had started sixth but quickly moved into contention.

The pair swapped positions multiple times in a tightly fought duel, with Antonelli eventually regaining the upper hand on track. However, his efforts were undone after the race when a track limits violation resulted in a time penalty, demoting the championship leader to sixth in the final classification — a costly setback in the context of the title fight.

Verstappen edges Hamilton in fierce midfield fight

Further back, Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton provided some of the race’s most intense action, engaging in wheel-to-wheel combat both on the opening lap and again midway through the Sprint. Their battles included light contact as neither driver yielded ground, but Verstappen ultimately had the edge in pace, crossing the line in sixth before being promoted to fifth following Antonelli’s penalty.

Behind them, Pierre Gasly secured the final point in eighth for Alpine after a clean and consistent drive. He was followed by Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar and team-mate Franco Colapinto, the pair engaging in their own late-race scrap that added further intensity to the closing laps.

Reliability blows and mixed fortunes across the field

Audi’s hopes of scoring were dealt a major blow before the race had even begun, when Nico Hulkenberg suffered a dramatic car fire on the way to the grid, forcing his retirement. Team-mate Gabriel Bortoleto initially showed promise with a strong старт but faded over the race distance, finishing 11th just outside the points.

Haas drivers Esteban Ocon and Ollie Bearman followed in 12th and 13th, while Carlos Sainz and Liam Lawson led their respective Williams and Racing Bulls efforts in 14th and 15th.

Aston Martin gamble falls short as Cadillac complete home debut

Aston Martin attempted an alternative strategy by starting both Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll on soft tyres, diverging from the more common medium compound choice. However, the gamble failed to pay off, with Alonso finishing 16th and Stroll 18th after struggling for pace over the Sprint distance.

Cadillac completed their first home Formula 1 race with Sergio Perez in 17th and Valtteri Bottas in 20th, while Alex Albon — delayed by a late front wing change — finished 19th as the final classified runner.

Two drivers failed to make the finish: Hulkenberg, following his pre-race fire, and Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad, who had been set to start from the pit lane but never took to the track.

With a clinical victory under pressure, Norris not only strengthened McLaren’s resurgence but also injected fresh momentum into the championship narrative — setting up a fascinating Grand Prix to come in Miami.
