Formula 1 returned after the summer break, with no better stage for the restart of the 2025 F1 World Championship than the tight, twisting dunes of Zandvoort. The Dutch Grand Prix had rapidly become one of the calendar’s most atmospheric stops since its return in 2021, combining a festival-like homecoming for Max Verstappen with the unique challenge of a circuit that feels tailor-made for modern ground-effect cars. This year, however, Zandvoort would not only be the first race back after the season’s pause, but also the penultimate event at the track, with the Dutch Grand Prix dropping off the calendar after 2026.

The race weekend also celebrated Pirelli’s 500th Formula 1 World Championship Grand Prix as an official presence in the sport. The Italian tyre company’s story stretches all the way back to Silverstone on 13 May 1950, where Giuseppe Farina, driving an Alfa Romeo, led home a podium swept entirely on Pirellis at the very first world championship race, the 1950 British Grand Prix. From its early years, through its second era in the 1980s and early ’90s, and as the sport’s current tyre partner in 2025, Pirelli’s name has been interwoven with some of Formula 1’s greatest moments. To mark the milestone, every slick tyre in Zandvoort carried a special “500 GP” logo, and as part of F1’s 75th anniversary celebrations, while the festivities would continue at Monza the following weekend—fittingly, Pirelli’s home race.

Zandvoort may look like a throwback on the calendar, but it delivers one of the most distinctive challenges of the Championship. At just 4.259 kilometres, the circuit is a short, relentless rollercoaster through the dunes of the North Sea coast, less than an hour from Amsterdam. It’s 14 corners flow in quick succession, demanding accuracy and rhythm, but what really sets Zandvoort apart are its two spectacularly banked turns—Turn 3 (Hugenholtzbocht) and the final Arie Luyendyk corner—tilted at 19 and 18 degrees respectively, steeper than anything drivers face at Indianapolis. These dramatic cambers, combined with the track’s narrow profile and almost old-school layout, make it one of the most technically unforgiving laps in modern Formula 1.

The circuit is also a stern examination of tyre and car management. High vertical and lateral loads push tyre compounds to the limit, forcing teams to balance grip, downforce, and durability across a race distance. Set-ups tend toward maximum downforce—similar to Budapest—but Zandvoort’s exposed coastal position throws in another wildcard: the sand and salt winds off the North Sea can reduce grip in an instant. Add in the famously unpredictable late-summer weather of the Dutch coast, with temperatures often dipping below 20°C, and you have a venue that constantly keeps teams and drivers on edge.

Zandvoort Stats

The 2025 Dutch Grand Prix was the 35th time Zandvoort had hosted a round of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship, maintaining its unique status as the only circuit ever to stage the event. From its debut in 1952, through its classic years in the ’70s and ’80s, to its revival in 2021 with a modernised layout, Zandvoort has remained inseparable from the identity of Dutch motorsport. Its current configuration may be just a few years old, but the track’s heritage runs deep, and the record books reflect an illustrious roll call of champions who mastered its fast, flowing rhythm.

Before the 2025 race, Jim Clark still stood as the benchmark, his four victories in a Lotus were a golden era for both driver and team. Close behind, Jackie Stewart, Niki Lauda, and local hero Max Verstappen each have three wins, with Verstappen also equalling René Arnoux’s record of three pole positions. In terms of sheer consistency, Clark and Lauda shared the lead with six podiums apiece, while Ferrari sat atop the constructors’ honours with eight wins and a staggering 26 podium finishes. Lotus trailed just behind with six victories and a record eight poles, while McLaren’s tally rose to four thanks to Lando Norris’s breakthrough win in 2024.

In Saturday qualifying, Oscar Piastri secured pole position for the Grand Prix with a 1:08.662, edging McLaren team-mate Lando Norris by just 0.012s after a tense qualifying duel. Max Verstappen delighted the home fans by taking third, rookie Isack Hadjar starred in fourth, and George Russell rounded out the top five, while Ferrari locked out row three with Leclerc and Hamilton.

Come Sunday, Oscar Piastri won a dramatic Dutch Grand Prix after McLaren team-mate and title rival Lando Norris retired late with a mechanical failure, a result that swung the 2025 F1 World Championship battle firmly in Piastri’s favour. The Australian had led from pole and controlled proceedings despite two Safety Car interruptions, ultimately beating Max Verstappen by 1.271s. Rookie Isack Hadjar scored a stunning maiden podium in third, becoming one of the youngest podium finishers in F1, while George Russell finished fourth and Alex Albon climbed from P15 to fifth. Haas celebrated with Ollie Bearman sixth and Esteban Ocon tenth, as Aston Martin and Red Bull also claimed points, but Ferrari endured a nightmare with both Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton retiring.

Championship background

The battle for the 2025 F1 World Championship was finely poised as the season picked back up again at Zandvoort. Lando Norris arrived in the Netherlands as the man in form, having won three of the final four races before the break to slash Oscar Piastri’s title lead to just nine points. The McLaren team-mates had turned the championship fight into an intramural duel, with momentum swinging back toward Norris thanks to his relentless consistency and a superb victory here in 2024 that stunned the partisan Dutch crowd. For Piastri, the task was to reassert his authority, knowing that the slightest slip could turn the standings on their head.

Yet the McLarens were not alone in this fight. Max Verstappen, racing in front of his home fans, would be desperate to re-establish Red Bull as a frontrunner after a muted run into the summer break. The Dutchman’s “orange army” transforms Zandvoort into a festival of noise and colour, and their presence would only fuel his determination to spoil McLaren’s surge.

Ferrari, meanwhile, continued to chase a first victory of 2025, with Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton eager to disrupt the Norris–Piastri dynamic, while Hamilton’s quest for his first podium in red remained one of the year’s lingering storylines.

Race entries

The lineup of drivers and teams remained the same as the 2025 season’s entry list, apart from:

Aside from these changes, all the drivers from the start of the season took to the track during FP1, FP2, FP3, Qualifying, and the Grand Prix.

Tyre choices

Tyres were set to play a decisive role at Zandvoort, with Pirelli opting for a softer range of compounds than in 2024. Teams would now work with the C2 (Hard), C3 (Medium), and C4 (Soft), one step down from the previous year’s selection of C1 through C3. The change, agreed with the FIA and Formula 1’s organisers, was designed to open up strategy and increase the chances of a two-stop race, in contrast to the one-stop approaches that have dominated since the Dutch Grand Prix returned to the calendar in 2021. By bringing grippier compounds into play on one of the most demanding circuits for tyre load, Pirelli was encouraging teams to think beyond simply managing wear and instead look for ways to attack.

Another variable came from the FIA’s decision to raise the pit lane speed limit from 60 to 80 km/h, cutting precious seconds off every stop and making additional tyre changes less costly. Yet according to pre-race simulations, the one-stop remained the fastest theoretical route—largely because overtaking at Zandvoort remained a daunting task. With its narrow ribbon of tarmac and limited straights, opportunities to pass have been scarce in the modern era, putting even more weight on qualifying and track position. Still, if the softer compounds degraded as expected, and if safety cars or weather added chaos into the mix, strategy at the 2025 Dutch Grand Prix could swing wide open, offering teams a chance to gamble and fans the spectacle of something other than a tyre-saving procession.

Free Practice

In FP1, Lando Norris set the pace, leading a McLaren 1-2 in FP1 with a best lap of 1:10.278 ahead of Oscar Piastri and Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll. The session was briefly red-flagged after Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli slid into the Turn 9 gravel, while Lewis Hamilton spun early on and home favourite Max Verstappen ended sixth after beaching his Red Bull at Turn 1. Ferrari endured a low-key start, with Charles Leclerc and Hamilton only 14th and 15th, leaving McLaren to carry the early momentum into Zandvoort.

Lando Norris completed a clean sweep of Friday practice at Zandvoort by topping FP2 with a 1:09.890, narrowly ahead of Fernando Alonso and Oscar Piastri. The session was disrupted by two red flags, first for Lance Stroll’s heavy crash at Turn 3 and later for Alex Albon’s off at Turn 1, while Max Verstappen finished only fifth in front of his home crowd. George Russell claimed fourth, Lewis Hamilton suffered another spin, and Ferrari continued to struggle, leaving McLaren firmly in control of the opening day.

In FP3, Lando Norris completed a dominant clean sweep of practice at Zandvoort by topping the session with a 1:08.972, finishing over two-tenths ahead of McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri. George Russell was third despite a close call with Fernando Alonso on pit entry, while Carlos Sainz impressed with fourth for Williams. Home favourite Max Verstappen could manage only fifth, almost a second adrift, as Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, Alex Albon, and Lance Stroll filled the chasing pack. With McLaren leading every session so far, the papaya team headed into qualifying as the clear favourites.

What happened in the 2025 Dutch Grand Prix?

Oscar Piastri claimed victory in a chaotic Dutch Grand Prix, but the story of the day was the heartbreak for McLaren team-mate and title rival Lando Norris, who retired with a mechanical failure just laps from the finish. The result could prove a defining moment in the 2025 F1 World Championship, as Piastri extended his lead in the standings to 34 points with his seventh win of the season.

The race began with Piastri converting his pole position into the lead, though the action behind him was immediate. Max Verstappen surged past Norris at Turn 1 to take second, igniting a roar from the orange-clad grandstands. Norris, however, swiftly reclaimed the place and the McLarens settled into a commanding 1-2 formation, pulling away from the field.

The first major twist came on Lap 23, when Lewis Hamilton hit the barriers and triggered a Safety Car. McLaren double-stacked their drivers in the pits, a slightly slow stop for Norris costing him time but not position. Both cars re-emerged still in control of the race, with Verstappen shadowing closely in third. A second Safety Car followed after contact between Charles Leclerc and rookie Kimi Antonelli eliminated the Ferrari, compressing the field once again and keeping strategy wide open.

As the final laps approached, Norris appeared poised to challenge his team-mate for the win when disaster struck: smoke began pouring from the back of his McLaren. Forced to pull over and retire, Norris cut a dejected figure as his championship hopes absorbed a major blow. A third Safety Car neutralised the field, but on the restart Piastri held firm, crossing the line in 1:38:29.849 to secure victory.

Verstappen salvaged second place in front of his home fans, finishing just 1.271s behind, while rookie Isack Hadjar delivered a sensational drive to claim third and his maiden F1 podium for Racing Bulls. George Russell was fourth for Mercedes, with Alex Albon producing one of the drives of the day to climb from P15 on the grid to fifth for Williams.

Further back, Haas enjoyed a standout day as Ollie Bearman charged from the pit lane to sixth on a clever one-stop strategy, joined in the points by team-mate Esteban Ocon in P10. Aston Martin scored a double points finish, Lance Stroll seventh and Fernando Alonso eighth, while Yuki Tsunoda took ninth for Red Bull.

Alpine rookie Franco Colapinto narrowly missed the top 10 in P11, ahead of Liam Lawson’s Racing Bulls and Carlos Sainz, who slipped to 13th after a penalty for contact with Lawson. Nico Hülkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto followed for Kick Sauber, while Antonelli endured a rough afternoon en route to P16, collecting two penalties to compound his collision with Leclerc. Pierre Gasly was the final classified runner in P17.

For Ferrari, it was a weekend to forget: both Leclerc and Hamilton failed to finish, joining Norris on the list of high-profile retirements. With McLaren’s title fight suddenly tilted heavily in Piastri’s favour, Zandvoort may well be remembered as the race that shifted the balance of the 2025 F1 World Championship.
