Championship background

Mika Häkkinen arrived at round 7 leading the 1999 F1 World Championship on 34 points, with Michael Schumacher on 30. Ferrari headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 55 points.

Race entries

The regular twenty-two drivers remained in place. Damon Hill had announced his intention to retire at the end of the season, while Heinz-Harald Frentzen returned after the heavy Canadian accident that had kept him out of testing.

Free Practice

Ferrari sat out opening practice to conserve tyres after a productive test, while Häkkinen topped the session on limited running. David Coulthard stopped with a suspected pneumatic leak and McLaren changed his engine. Jean Alesi escaped injury when his Sauber hit the barrier and overturned, leaving the car badly damaged.

Michael Schumacher led the afternoon despite an early excursion caused by a brake-balance problem. Eddie Irvine compared revised and older bodywork, while hotter, windier conditions prevented many rivals improving. Both BAR drivers became stranded after spins, and Jean Alesi‘s damaged Sauber remained under repair.

Saturday began with an opportunity to run before the surface became wetter. Rubens Barrichello made the most of the conditions to set the morning’s fastest lap. Ferrari conserved tyres while using its qualifying engines, and BAR‘s overnight changes gave its drivers a more comfortable balance.

Rain changed the emphasis in the second Saturday session, with David Coulthard especially quick on the wet surface. Teams struggled to settle on settings for conditions that kept changing. Jean Alesi spun and then damaged his gearbox while attempting to get going, adding another interruption to a difficult weekend.

Each practice table combines that day’s two sessions, showing each driver’s best time and total laps.

Qualifying

Rubens Barrichello judged the worsening weather superbly to take Stewart‘s first pole with a 1:38.441. Jean Alesi joined him on the front row, with Olivier Panis third. Drivers who waited for conditions to improve paid heavily, including Häkkinen in fourteenth and Eddie Irvine in seventeenth.

David Coulthard secured fourth despite a late excursion, followed by Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Michael Schumacher. Five drivers fell outside the 107% threshold, but the stewards allowed them to start in view of the exceptional conditions and their earlier practice performance. The unusual grid left several championship contenders needing a recovery.

Damon Hill, Marc Gené, Luca Badoer, Pedro de la Rosa and Toranosuke Takagi all failed to set a lap time within the 107% limit, but were allowed to race due to poor weather conditions during qualifying. They were ordered in grid by free practice times, therefore Hill started 18th, de la Rosa 19th, Takagi 20th, Badoer 21st and Gené 22nd.

Sunday warm-up

Warm-up took place on a wet circuit in noticeably cooler conditions. David Coulthard led the Ferraris, giving McLaren encouragement after Häkkinen’s poor qualifying result. The session allowed the drivers to reassess the grip before a race that would begin dry but still carried a substantial threat of rain.

What happened in the 1999 French Grand Prix?

David Coulthard passed Rubens Barrichello for the lead but retired with electrical trouble, while Häkkinen charged through the field. Heavy rain then forced tyre changes and a lengthy safety-car period. Jordan filled Heinz-Harald Frentzen‘s car with enough fuel to reach the finish, a decision that would prove decisive.

Häkkinen spun while attacking Rubens Barrichello and had to recover again. Michael Schumacher eventually led, only for an electrical problem to compromise his race and force a stop that included a steering-wheel change. Häkkinen returned to the front, but both he and Rubens Barrichello still needed fuel.

Their late stops handed Heinz-Harald Frentzen the lead and his first victory for Jordan. Häkkinen finished second and Rubens Barrichello third, ahead of Ralf Schumacher, Michael Schumacher and Eddie Irvine. Häkkinen extended his championship lead, while Heinz-Harald Frentzen‘s victory rewarded Jordan‘s calm decisions in a race full of changing fortunes.

After the race, Mika Häkkinen headed the drivers’ standings with 40 points, followed by Michael Schumacher on 32. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 58, with McLaren on 52.
