Mika Häkkinen led McLaren‘s first one-two finish of the season in the Spanish Grand Prix at Circuit de Catalunya. David Coulthard resisted Michael Schumacher‘s challenge for second as McLaren converted its speed into a much-needed result.

Championship background
Michael Schumacher arrived at round 5 leading the 1999 F1 World Championship on 26 points, with Eddie Irvine on 18. Ferrari headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 44 points.
Race entries
Mika Salo continued to deputise for Ricardo Zonta at BAR. The remaining line-ups were unchanged, with Jacques Villeneuve seeking the new team’s first finish and Marc Gené preparing for his home Grand Prix with Minardi.
Free Practice
Eddie Irvine led Michael Schumacher in opening practice before a harmless late spin. Dust and strong wind made the cars behave differently from the preceding test, so several drivers limited their laps. Sauber evaluated aerodynamic and suspension changes, while Mika Salo stopped with engine trouble and Luca Badoer damaged his car over the kerbing.
Stronger winds and a warmer surface prevented many improvements in the afternoon. Eddie Irvine retained the day’s fastest time, while Heinz-Harald Frentzen used fresh tyres to move into second. Gené damaged his Minardi in a spin, and Sauber had to address damage caused when Jean Alesi struck a television-camera installation near a kerb.

Michael Schumacher worked on his differential settings to improve traction during Saturday’s opening running. Pedro Diniz lost most of the first session after spinning into the gravel. With the wind reduced, Heinz-Harald Frentzen adjusted the Jordan to the changed conditions while Williams continued searching for a workable balance.
David Coulthard finished the morning fastest but spun when his rear suspension failed near the pit entrance. Eddie Irvine crashed early in the second session, missing his planned run on fresh tyres. Jacques Villeneuve also stopped twice with fuel-pressure problems, although he still showed competitive speed before qualifying.

Qualifying
Häkkinen claimed his fifth successive pole of the season, but Eddie Irvine split the McLarens to take second. David Coulthard qualified third, ahead of Michael Schumacher. The result gave Ferrari a direct opportunity to challenge at the start despite Häkkinen’s continued qualifying dominance.
Jean Alesi took fifth for Sauber and Jacques Villeneuve sixth for BAR. Rubens Barrichello, Heinz-Harald Frentzen, Jarno Trulli and Ralf Schumacher completed the top ten. On a circuit where passing was difficult, the opening corners would be particularly important for those hoping to remain with the leaders.

What happened in the 1999 Spanish Grand Prix?
Häkkinen led away, while David Coulthard and Jacques Villeneuve both made strong starts. Eddie Irvine fell behind them and Michael Schumacher, leaving the Ferraris trapped behind the BAR as the McLarens opened a gap. Schumacher finally moved ahead of Jacques Villeneuve during the first pit stops and began chasing David Coulthard.
Schumacher reduced the deficit and threatened second, but David Coulthard emerged ahead after the next stops and held his position. Jacques Villeneuve‘s promising run ended with rear-wing damage and a gearbox failure. Häkkinen remained in control, with enough pace to manage the race from the front.
Häkkinen won ahead of David Coulthard and Michael Schumacher, with Eddie Irvine fourth. Ralf Schumacher and Jarno Trulli completed the points scorers. It was the first time both McLarens had finished a race that season, and Häkkinen reduced Schumacher’s championship lead to six points.
After the race, Michael Schumacher headed the drivers’ standings with 30 points, followed by Mika Häkkinen on 24. Ferrari led the constructors’ table on 51, with McLaren on 36.
