Championship background

Mika Häkkinen arrived at round 13 leading the 1999 F1 World Championship on 60 points, with Eddie Irvine on 59. McLaren headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 106 points.

Race entries

Mika Salo continued in Michael Schumacher‘s place for Ferrari‘s home race. Rubens Barrichello arrived having agreed to join Ferrari the following season, but his immediate task remained to score points for Stewart alongside Johnny Herbert.

Free Practice

Jean Alesi surprised the leading teams by topping opening practice for Sauber, despite finding the car sensitive to changes in pitch. David Coulthard lost time having grass removed from his McLaren after crossing the first chicane. Damon Hill had a driveshaft problem, while Gené damaged his rear wing and Luca Badoer also suffered driveshaft trouble.

Ralf Schumacher went fastest in the afternoon as Williams explored its qualifying setup. Jean Alesi‘s session ended with an engine failure after an earlier electrical delay, and Olivier Panis also stopped with engine trouble. Ferrari‘s drivers remained unhappy with a nervous balance, while the McLarens concentrated on running with heavier fuel loads.

Saturday’s preparations brought more work for Ferrari over Monza‘s kerbs: Mika Salo tried additional downforce and Eddie Irvine a different weight distribution. Stewart changed Rubens Barrichello‘s engine during the morning, while Benetton battled inconsistent grip and a leaking radiator on Giancarlo Fisichella‘s car. The drivers needed confidence across the chicanes before committing to qualifying laps.

Heinz-Harald Frentzen finished the final practice session fastest, but Damon Hill damaged his front wing in contact with his team-mate near the end. Olivier Panis became stranded in the gravel at Lesmo, while both BAR drivers also went off. Toranosuke Takagi suffered an engine failure. Häkkinen saved fresh tyres at the end as David Coulthard finished ahead of him.

Qualifying

Häkkinen took pole with a 1:22.432, almost half a second faster than Heinz-Harald Frentzen. David Coulthard qualified third, but Alessandro Zanardi produced one of his strongest performances of the season to take fourth, just ahead of Williams team-mate Ralf Schumacher.

Mika Salo was the leading Ferrari in sixth, followed by Rubens Barrichello and Eddie Irvine. Damon Hill and Olivier Panis completed the top ten. For Eddie Irvine, eighth was a disappointing starting point at Ferrari‘s home race, particularly with his championship rival alone at the front of the grid.

What happened in the 1999 Italian Grand Prix?

Häkkinen led away while Alessandro Zanardi jumped into second before Heinz-Harald Frentzen reclaimed the place. David Coulthard dropped behind Ralf Schumacher and Mika Salo. Alessandro Zanardi damaged his car over a kerb early on and gradually slipped back, allowing Ralf to take up Williams‘ challenge.

Häkkinen was leading comfortably when he selected the wrong gear approaching the first chicane and spun out. Heinz-Harald Frentzen inherited the lead and managed the remaining distance to claim his second win of the season. Ralf Schumacher finished second, while Mika Salo moved ahead of Rubens Barrichello through the pit stops to secure another Ferrari podium.

Rubens Barrichello resisted David Coulthard for fourth, with Eddie Irvine holding off Alessandro Zanardi for the final point. Häkkinen and Eddie Irvine were now tied on sixty points, the Finn retaining the championship lead on wins. Heinz-Harald Frentzen‘s victory brought him within ten points of the leaders and kept Jordan firmly in the title conversation.

After the race, Mika Häkkinen headed the drivers’ standings with 60 points, followed by Eddie Irvine on 60. McLaren led the constructors’ table on 108, with Ferrari on 102.
