Championship background

Ayrton Senna arrived at round 7 leading the 1993 F1 World Championship on 42 points, with Alain Prost on 37. Williams headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 55 points.

Race entries

The same 26 drivers travelled to Canada. Ferrari introduced its latest engine specification on both cars, Jordan brought several revisions and Tyrrell continued developing active suspension on the existing chassis while its new car awaited a race debut. Philippe Alliot reached his 100th Grand Prix.

Friday Free Practice

Alain Prost led Friday practice, with Williams immediately comfortable on the Montreal circuit. Several rivals had more difficult development programmes: Tyrrell was learning its active suspension, while Lotus suffered a serious suspension-system problem that disrupted Johnny Herbert‘s running. Ferrari‘s new engine equipment offered promise, but the team still had to combine that speed with dependable handling.

Saturday Free Practice

Alain Prost remained fastest on Saturday morning as the heat increased. McLaren struggled to find a satisfactory balance, and Ayrton Senna‘s weekend was further complicated by contact with Christian Fittipaldi during Saturday’s running. The Minardi driver had to use his team-mate’s car for qualifying, while the conditions made improving Friday’s best times increasingly difficult.

Saturday Qualifying

Higher temperatures on Saturday helped protect the leading Friday times. Alain Prost was fastest again but did not beat his previous 1:18.987, which secured his seventh consecutive pole. The front three rows stayed unchanged, while Michele Alboreto once more missed the cut in the Lola.

Sunday warm-up

The warm-up took place in more hot weather, with Alain Prost narrowly ahead of Michael Schumacher and Damon Hill. Tyre durability was an important consideration before the long race distance, and the leading teams prepared for tyre changes rather than assuming they could maintain their qualifying advantage throughout. McLaren still needed a cleaner afternoon after its troubled build-up.

What happened in the 1993 Canadian Grand Prix?

Damon Hill made the better start and led Alain Prost, while Ayrton Senna gained ground rapidly from eighth. Alain Prost passed Damon Hill early in the race and established control. Ayrton Senna moved ahead of the Ferraris and became the principal threat behind the Williams pair.

Damon Hill lost time at his tyre stop, allowing Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher to get ahead. Michael Schumacher pursued the McLaren, but their contest ended when Ayrton Senna‘s alternator failed late in the race. Michael Andretti had already endured a disastrous beginning after a battery problem forced him to start from the pits well behind the field.

Alain Prost won from Michael Schumacher and Damon Hill, with Gerhard Berger fourth. Martin Brundle and Karl Wendlinger took the remaining points. Ayrton Senna‘s retirement left Alain Prost back at the top of the championship, while Williams added another substantial constructors’ score.

After the race, Alain Prost headed the drivers’ standings with 47 points, followed by Ayrton Senna on 42. Williams led the constructors’ table on 69, with McLaren on 44.
