Championship background
Alain Prost arrived at round 11 leading the 1993 F1 World Championship on 77 points, with Ayrton Senna on 50. Williams headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 105 points.
Race entries
The driver line-ups were unchanged. Minardi brought revised rear suspension that helped Pierluigi Martini make a striking impression, while Ligier abandoned development of its own active-suspension project. Damon Hill arrived still seeking the victory that had twice slipped away from him.
Friday Free Practice
Alain Prost set the pace on Friday, but several teams spent much of the day chasing problems. McLaren struggled to make new active-suspension software work satisfactorily, and Larrousse encountered damper trouble. Minardi‘s revised rear suspension offered a more positive story, improving the car’s response on the slow, uneven circuit.

Saturday Free Practice
Alain Prost and Damon Hill were closely matched on Saturday morning, with Michael Schumacher also within reach. Benetton‘s running was complicated by unexplained vibration, while Christian Fittipaldi had a heavy accident during Saturday’s sessions. The tight circuit punished an unsettled balance, and many drivers were still wrestling with oversteer as qualifying approached.

Sunday warm-up
Alain Prost was quickest in the warm-up ahead of Michael Schumacher, but the rising heat promised a demanding race for tyres and machinery. Damon Hill completed his final preparations from the front row. Keeping a consistent balance over a long stint would matter more than one quick lap, especially where overtaking was so difficult.

What happened in the 1993 Hungarian Grand Prix?
Alain Prost stalled before the start and had to begin from the back, leaving Damon Hill with a clear opportunity. Damon Hill led away and established control while Ayrton Senna, Gerhard Berger, Riccardo Patrese and Michael Schumacher fought behind. Michael Schumacher lost ground through spins, and both McLarens retired with throttle problems.
Alain Prost recovered before a rear-wing problem cost him several laps in the pits. Michael Schumacher briefly reached second but retired with a fuel-system failure. Riccardo Patrese inherited the position, while Gerhard Berger recovered places after his tyre stop to secure third.
Damon Hill won comfortably, becoming the first son of a World Champion to win a Formula 1 Grand Prix. Riccardo Patrese took his final podium, Gerhard Berger finished third and Derek Warwick earned fourth for Footwork. Martin Brundle and Karl Wendlinger completed the points on a breakthrough day for Damon Hill.
After the race, Alain Prost headed the drivers’ standings with 77 points, followed by Ayrton Senna on 50. Williams led the constructors’ table on 115, with McLaren on 53.
